Tomato sauce - America.

Postby Gruney » November 14th, 2017, 3:43 pm

Just a quickie, please. I believe I know what is meant by a tomato sauce for, eg, pasta dishes.

I have one or two American cookery books, where recipes call for large quantities of "tomato sauce". I was watching a Lee Drummond program, where she added two cartons of "tomato sauce" - the camera gave a good view of this, and to my eye, it was passata. Is, in fact, passata what an American would call tomato sauce?

Marinara sauce is what we would call a basic tomato sauce for pasta or pizza, with onion, garlic, maybe herbs and wine too

American tomato sauce seems to be similar to your passata.
