White watermelons

Postby Ratatouille » December 29th, 2018, 2:10 pm

A friend turned up this morning with one. He has just come back fro Savoie where he spent Christmas and was given several.

It is indeed white inside, but what to do with it??

Does it taste like the usual water melon?

I’d be tempted to juice it ... I have a real hankering for fresh fruit juice at the moment :D

No it doesn't taste like a regular one it is rather more floral. It is rather pretty though. I've got some lychees in the freezer and I'm wondering about a white fruit salad with maybe some apple and pear.

That does sound rather lovely ... would a little cucumber and mint work with that do you think?

Oh I do like the sound of the white fruit salad! I agree with Suffs about the addition of cucumber and mint. So refreshing after all the rich fare.... :chops:

Seems a strange thing to have at this time of year but perhaps someone with an empty hothouse saw a chance to do something vaguely Christmassy - water melons crop quite fast

I Googled and found that watermelons come in many colours including black and gold :o

The idea of a white salad does appeal

Love the sound of the white watermelon. A white fruit salad sounds nice, I think I would prefer fruits of similar texture (lychee, pear etc) above apple.

Slices of star fruit would be good too ... if available.

Try it sprinkled with a little powdered ginger and, perhaps, just a touch of honey or sugar.
Alternately, wrap some Parma ham around it...

I was talking about it to Mannu our chef friend at lunch time - he likes the white salad idea but suggested some finely chopped stem ginger. Will report back later in the week.

I was intrigued so had a google.
When we went to Namibia for the first itme in 2001, we saw the local Nara melons and were told that modern day sweet melons were bred from them, though I don't know if that's actually true. They are small, white fleshed and not sweet at all but with a lot of water, so they were prized in a desert environment.
I wondered if the white watermelons were a closer step on the selective breeding path to the Nara melons, or whether that path is not how other melons came to be at all?
Anyway, found this https://www.rareseeds.com/white-wonder-watermelon/

I made the fruit salad yesterday and it was a very pleasant change from the rich Christmas stuff. I ad I added a splash of Fevertree ginger beer. ided the chopped ginger then, at the last minute I added some Fevertree ginger beer.

Kavey the outside of thie one I was given wasn't striped but a pale uniform green. I've collected some of the seeds to dry so if anyone fancied a go let me know.

We are moving to Wales over next few weeks and it may be a little time before we are ready to plant a fruit and veggie garden but I'd love to try, if you'd be able to save me a couple? <3
