.....anyone have a recipe please?

Doesn't need to be from scratch, doctoring a bit of Birds custard powder is fine by me ;) .

Thanks.

Haven't tried it but I would go for a sweet white sauce with a spoonful of cocoa.
Happy to be shot down.

I always thought chocolate custard was just packet chocolate blancmange made up perhaps a tiny bit thinner and kept warm?
That’s what we had at school but you need the Roman Paving Stones (chocolate shortbread squares) to go with it :D

This recipe for doctoring Bird’s custard looks plausible though I might find the muscovado a bit much

I have always made it a similar way to the Bird's recipe but with cornflour and cocoa rather than custard powder and not with muscavado. I find it more chocolatey without the vanilla flavouring from the custard powder and like to be quite generous with the cocoa so it is more chocolatey than when made from chocolate blancmange powder. This is basically what WW has suggested as well.

The recipe is quite annoying as it uses tablespoons for the custard powder/cornflour and grams for the cocoa powder and I have no idea what 50g of cocoa looks like. I have made it so many times in the past but can't remember the exact ratio of cocoa to cornflour I used but think it might have been 1/4 - 1/3 of the amount of cornflour. I wouldn't use skimmed milk either - it is nicer when a bit more creamy.

i think i've made it in the past with the prportions of cornflour (not the custard powder)/sugar/milk that are given on the birds tin then dropped broken bits of dark chocolate in until the required chocolatiness is gained.
or pretty much like earth maiden's, really

:chops:

When I was at primary school, the local school dinners service did a mean chocolate sponge that always came with chocolate custard. I could eat a bowl of it now. :hungry:

We used to have the custard hot or cold at home long before I had it with chocolate sponge at school. The choc sponge & choc custard became a big Sunday favourite when I was raising a family. I've mentioned before that my parents had a village shop for part of my childhood. My mother was often asked for ideas from women bored with feeding fussy husbands. Such husbands didn't think chocolate blancmange was a proper main meal pudding. My mother told several ladies to make a thick chocolate custard and serve it hot as 'Chocolate Pudding'. Amazingly it was deemed acceptable and liked by all!

Thanks folks.

I think this weekend the pud will be syrup sponge with ordinary custard but next weekend I'm itching to go the chocolate pud and chocolate custard route  .

Depending on how much custard you've got, melt a Mars bar or two into it.

I think chocolate custard on chocolate pud is overkill.
I prefer choc custard with plain sponge and vanilla custard with choc sponge.

Appreciate that probably shows I have no taste.

I can imagine it would be like melted Millionaire's Shortbread.

Would be well nice poured over ice cream. :chops:

And you've got the Aussies to thank for that one!!
But I think it's regular custard with the Mars bar added, poured over chocolate pudding, so maybe not quite as sweet??
