Instant porridge sachets - a glut!

Postby TeresaFoodie » August 21st, 2019, 12:00 pm

I am the proud owner of about a dozen (probably more!) sachets of the kind of instant porridge that just requires mixing with milk and microwaving for one minute, courtesy of my mum, who went through a phase of buying me a box for every time I saw her!

I do love them as they are or I like them with fresh fruit mixed through before cooking, but...

Are there any other uses for them other than as a breakfast cereal?

Keen to make some space in my larder! :D

a thickener for soup?
are they just very fine ground oats or are they pre-cooked and dried? I've never had them so i shouldn't make any suggestions, really!

You could try them in flapjacks or oatcakes. Might work.

Not sure about a soup thickener as I think they have added sugar.

If you've got oat flakes rather than a powder, you could try flapjacks. If the sachet contents are more finely ground, look for cake or biscuit recipes using oat flour.

Either might work in crumble toppings for fruit.

Is it like Ready Brek or 'proper' instant porridge? Sounds like the former as you only add water to the porridge. I like the oat flour idea. I have made corn bread using oats ground finely in a Nutribullet before instead of corn (so it was oat bread!). It might work for something like that.

It is like Ready Brek. Not really too fine and powdery, they have a bit of texture to them, so I think I might get away with flapjacks. I forgot to check ingredients last night but feel sure they have sugar in them.

Thanks for the ideas!

Can you add to yoghurt and fruit for breakfast?
