No they are not but it is a comparatively small area of the UK. Journalism in this country is becoming more and more irresponsible and no doubt this is propaganda from one particular party.

The wonderful Smash aliens are over fifty years old and some of us have still not tasted reconstituted mashed potato.

Fake news ... or rather misreporting by journalists who do not understand agriculture. Mybrother is a huge potato farmer supplying major supermarkets across the UK.

The main potato growing areas in the UK are not flooded at the moment ... and anyway the main potato crops have all been harvested and are in storage by now.
Potatoes are not grown through the winter ... they are frost-tender.

Nothing to worry about as far as the supply of UK grown potatoes is concerned :D

What farmers are concerned about is that a wet October has delayed the drilling of winter wheat.

i have looked her up online - she isn't exactly known for sticking with the truth if lies will make a 'better' story.
- and she obviously knows nothing about farming - maybe, either the nfu spokesman was spinning her a line - or she heard what she wanted to hear - either way she doesn't really cut the mustard as a 'news reporter'.

She actually quotes Minette Batters NFU chair as saying “... there are no shortages of potatoes” so where the headline came from goodness knows.

Nope no shortage here, apparently it's been a bumper year for "Ayrshire tatties" they seem to thrive in mild, wettish summers and the later harvest has been stored before the first frost.

Was talking about Smash yesterday. We never had it - my mother was a bit snooty about it, and I am sure it was a lot more expensive than 'real' potatoes and it tasted 'orrible. But my friend (with whom I was discussing it) loved it. It was forbidden food in her household, but her grandma used to serve it.

It's funny how some dried potato products taste really synthetic (as does actual potato if you re cook it, I have noticed, so that must be why the fried stuff does - overly processed = cooked/heated? Sue, this is your area of expertise?) but others don't. There is a German one that I used to buy (they sell it in sachets to reconstitute in a mug as a snack/office meal) and the Idaho one is ok. Purchased for novelty's sake when it was on offer, of course...

Wargarden, I hope you are not gloating over our alleged potato shortage! :o :)

I have no qualms about using Smash (some supermarket brands are not so nice). It needs a nice knob of butter when made and can be a godsend for quick meals, camping etc and also as a thickener. I have never understood why people are so snobbish about it, like many other convenience foods, it has its place.

I seem to recall another brand from my camping days as a youth - "Yeoman". It wasn't great.

I remember that too - I'm not sure any of the early brands were great really but nowadays Smash seems ok if you tart it up a bit. I used to make a 'fish pie' which could be on the table within 10 minutes using tinned tuna, packet parsley sauce, instant potato and frozen peas. I don't think packet parsley sauce has ever improved but that's another tale . Thank goodness for microwave ovens.

Instant mash makes the best tattie scones I've discovered. I always have a pack in the cupboard though seldom use it as straight mash usually as a thickener in soup in tinned tuna or salmon fishcakes. I quite like the Idaho brand but the one I tend to use is the cheap "Stockwell" version from Tesco. I'm not a fan of actual "Smash" to me it has an odd aftertaste.

Isn't it funny how the adverts of your childhood are permanently embedded?

Does anyone remember 'Look out, look out there's a Humphrey about'? It came to my mind the other day but Mr S didn't recall it. Wasn't it Unigate milk?

The first Christmas advert I can remember. I don’t recall it at any other time if the year but you knew it was Christmas when that advert appeared. And yes I got a Timex watch the Christmas I could tell the time, it had glow in the dark numerals, and yes I used to test it with a torch under the bedclothes!

Herbi, some of those (didn't watch all) just roll back the years - who'd have thought!

Surprised so few seem to remember Sainsburys and Mog. It was quite a thing at
the time and only 4 years ago!

So many jingles to remember from radio too. The classic Australian one for Aeroplane jelly .... https://youtu.be/ECM0in6zvsE

Macleans toothpaste from pirate radio days - "It's Macleans, the toothpaste that cleans with a new kind of taste that's wild yeah, yeah, yeah, what a taste, what a zing, when you smile all the bells will ring, get it right, start the night with Macleans".

The power of advertising!!

adverts, even most of the christmas ones, have passed me by for at least the last couple of decades. we had a video recorder, dvd recorder then went over to humax machines so recorded anything on commercial stations and flicked through the ads and still do.
i think i may have seen the mog one but i imagine i'd have had to watch it online. it is a good one.
