Flapjack question

This is the place where the bakers hang out. Cakes and breads abound.

Flapjack question

Postby slimpersoninside » May 11th, 2018, 8:24 am

This may be a silly question, or maybe not  .

Are homemade millionaires flapjacks gluten free? I'm not very good with anti-allergy cooking.

Thank you.

It depends

Oats might contain gluten if processed in factories that handle other cereals. Gluten free oats should be OK. However, oats contain similar proteins to other cereals. Most coeliacs can tolerate these but a very few cannot. You are probably alright serving gluten free oats to a diagnosed coeliac, but if the consumer is self-diagnosed as gluten intolerant, they might be more likely to object.

It's certainly not a silly question

As others have said, it depends on the recipe and the oats used. If I'm cooking gluten-free I buy oats which say gluten-free on them.

Thank you all.
I asked as I will be taking cakes into work soon and I know there are at least 2 there with a gluten allergy, thought these might have made a welcome "different offering". As I don't know much about their allergies I think I might stick to an almond based cake or something.
