Hmm. Sell by dates. Evidently they were designed to avoid unnecessary problems, but I often wonder how, exactly, they are determined. Is it a scientific test, is it a calculated guess or is it a marketing ploy to get stuff sold as quickly as possible?
I`m very much aware of them, but I rarely take them at face value.
Cheese, for example..I`ve had some soft French cheeses in the fridge which I`ve used two or three weeks AFTER the sell-by date. They actually taste even better.
Tinned stuff? I`ve used products that are a few weeks past the date; some are fine, some are not.
I follow aero`s suggestion; if it smells bad, or it looks "runny" - chuck it out. If not, taste it. If it tastes odd, chuck it out. If not, eat it.
