Actually, Grassy, I think that's not at all bad under the circs. It'll all be gone (and more) within a week or two. I don't even dare weigh myself.

At work, as part of an ongoing health campaign we have been offered vouchers for 3 months free at Slimming World. I have never really fancied going, especially as my ex OH lives nearby and might see me going in  but can only think that the fact some stranger would weigh me each week might be an incentive for doing the 'right thing' at times when I have little motivation. I have signed up and am awaiting the vouchers.

Is it a big secret or can someone divulge what happens at a class/visit?

They will take all your details and weigh you. Your weight is completely confidential- no one bar the group leader and assistant who weighs you knows it.

The leader will take you and any other new people through the plan and explain how it works. Then there is a group session where everyone's loss/gain is celebrated and only if you want to, discussed. Along the lines of what you feel went well and what you struggled with.

No one could look forward to these sessions less than me, it is so not how I tick, but I stuck with it and actually gained an awful lot of support from the group.

There will probably be a closed Facebook page for your group, again quite useful mid week when motivation is lacking.

I've done slimming world three times over the last 25 years, each time I did lose in the region of three stones, but I invariably put it back on. I truly believe weight loss is a mental not physical thing, your head has got to be in the right plAce to be successful, I've got too much stress with my mum to mentally commit at the moment. I'll get back on the plan eventually when I have head space.

If you decide to go for it I wish you well.

P.s. Shift workers, which I think you may be have special dispensation in not having to pay for missed classes due to shift patterns.

No secret! I can only tell you what my class is like, others may be different. When you arrive at your first meeting you are given a form to fill in and you have the plan explained to you by your SW consultant. You are given all the relevant literature which is usually a bit daunting. Meanwhile you will see a queue snaking round the room. This is to pay, to buy the books, mags, ScanBran, HiFi bars etc. Once you have paid you queue up to be weighed by someone else on the team. Your weight is never mentioned but you'll be told how many pounds you've lost or gained. At your first meeting you aren't weighed until after the meeting in case you decide it isn't for you.

Once everyone has been weighed the SW consultant starts the main meeting. Not everyone stays for this bit but you really should. Ours goes round the room congratulating everyone who has lost and making sure those who have gained know what went wrong. There are tips for and from everyone re recipes and what's new or changed. Once a month there is a buffet night where you can bring in food you have made for everyone to share.

Others may add more . . .

Here's how things happen where I go:
Newbies are given a form to fill in their details, and are, at first, seated away from the main group.
Then the Social Team (those who man the desks, run the shop, do the drinks, etc. get weighed first, before going to their various duties
While the main group is going through pay, weigh, drinkies and purchasing items from the shop, the consultant will meet the newbies and explain the details of Slimming World.
The newbies will then be invited to join the main group, and the consultant will talk with each member, congratulating them on losses/maintains, while comiserating about gains. Members will also offer tips & recipies too.
There are also two baskets on the table. One is gradually filled with fruit, veg, and other 'free' items donated by the members. This basket is won by the Slimmer of the Week The other basket contains that week's raffle prize, which could be anything from the ingredients for a stew, to a kitchen gadget.
Awards are also handed out. You get an award for each half stone you lose, plus a Club 10 for losing 10% of your bodyweight. Awards are also handed out for Body Magic (AKA exercise).
The slimmer of the week basket is awarded to the member who has lost the most weight that week, having lost or maintained the previous week.
The raffle is also drawn.
As some members of the Social Team clear up, newbies get weighed, set their targets, are issued with their member's packs and ID cards, and may also be invited to join an SW facebook group.

Thank you Busybee, PP & Grasshopper. I think for me the biggest incentive is going to be that I have to face being weighed by someone else every week! The hall up the road from me has several groups a week run by different people. One person does 2 groups a week on different days so I shall go to that one to and explain about the shifts.

I am just waiting for my vouchers to arrive now and getting quite excited about doing something I never thought I would .... just as well the Wildie meet and the work take-away evening are coming up beforehand  .

Well, I have survived the first meeting! It was pretty much as you all said it would be. The queue to pay took 45 minutes to get through and because it was a morning meeting the hall was filled with bored under-3's all wishing they were elsewhere :? . I stayed for all the other stuff. PP mentioned a buffet, well there was similar which I think happens each week. Almost each person had made something, noting down the recipe so that they could advise how well it tied in with the SW system. As soon as people had paid they grabbed paper plates and tucked in with gusto, something I found a bit strange for a slimming club to do at 10am but no doubt each person fitted it into their day somehow.

It was all quite jolly anyway. I am now reading through all the stuff before I go shopping. Once you have the SW card you can go to any meeting anywhere so shifts will be no excuse :).

EM - our group has 'taster nights' every few weeks. We had one this week. Me & Mum made SW egg-fried rice - YUM!

Ok - results:
Mum - up 2.5 lbs
Moi - up 1 lb - and we don't know why.

But we WILL both have losses next week!

Never mind Grassy - how much have you lost in total now? I had SW chips tonight :chops: . Quite a treat! At the meeting they gave an annual couples award out to a couple who had lost a huge amount over the year. The lady brought a pair of trousers which she fitted into this time last year ... she was nearly half the size now. Wow!

SW chips are lovely aren't they EM? :chops: I'm not a SW member but I do visit their website and FB page regularly and cook a lot of SW recipes. I'm back on it more seriously at present as I put on a bit over/coming up to Christmas and I really need to be back to my fighting weight before the half marathon on 18th March so 10lb needs to go ideally (or at least half a stone).

Grassy, I was wondering whether you and your mum were up for the couple awards? (I think mother/daughter combos count as well as 'couples' if I recall correctly)

Well, we thought we were in with a chance, having been at it for 2.5 years and all that, but we never got a chance to vote, as it was GIVEN to a pair who hadn't been coming for very long!

We felt cheated! :x

Well, so far so good. I had lost 5.5lb! Presumably that means all my excess water has drained and I will be lucky to lose 1lb by next week but it was a nice little boost all the same. The group leader told us how we could make an almost syn free 'romantic takeaway style treat' for Valentines Day. It consisted of chips, noodles and curry sauce. if any of you fellas out there would like the recipe to woo your love, just let me know.

Woo,hoo for you. It's a great start, and gives you a mental boost.

I am going out somewhere nice to eat tomorrow and shall have what I like - bang goes next week's weigh-in as well

Well done grassy! Onwards and upwards!

PP - what is the knee made of? I suppose it could make you weigh more - but you might be retaining liquid as well. Hope you start to feel better very soon

A pound is still a pound EM, better than putting one on. Whilst not going to slimming world I am back on 5:2 very seriously as all my clothes were getting very tight  as well as that I have cut out alcohol ( watches everyone pick themselves up off the floor  0)and it is beginning to make a difference, however, I know if I get on the scales I will be shocked and disheartened, so until a few things start to fit better I am avoiding them.

I dont know what it is about food and weight loss, but I crave stuff I wouldnt normally eat too.

PP, it's quite normal to weigh more shortly after surgery apparently. It's a combination of water retention and the stuff they use to make sure you're breathing OK.

Well done Grassy! :D

EM- 1lb is fantastic! The main thing is to keep losing or to maintain. There's always going to be patches where you can't be as good as you'd like. I think you're doing really well.

Chinch, I'm in the same boat as you. I'm a good 10lb heavier than I really like to be at present and I am determined to shift it.

Pepper Pig wrote:I haven't eaten much since my op. A combination of feeling very sick, I think because of the general anaesthetic, and just not feeling at all hungry. I just weighed myself. 4lbs up!!!   Just how much does an artificial knee weigh? :o :o

Well done girls. Love the romantic meal EM.  Wait until you come across the SW Fererro Rocher recipe. :chops:

Pepper Pig when I had brain surgery I ate a grand total of 3 strawberries and half an orange in 4 days. I gained 10lbs. My blood pressure was so low they were pumping drips trough my arms like the clappers. I was in a blind panic when I discovered what my weight had doe (weight is a bit of an issue for me) to the point of sobbing. 3 days later 15lbs off. The 10lbs was all fluid not weight gain and comes off as quick as it goes on, the extra 5lbs off was weight loss and a true indicator of what weight had done. I would say post hospital where drips are involved don't weight yourself for a week because you won't get a true weight. Hope you are feeling more comfortable by the way

Surely you mean downwards? ;)
It is frustrating when you only lose a bit, or not at all, but It WILL come off. You need to keep telling yourself that. It's a bit like the old fable of the hare and the tortoise and WHO won the race, eh!.

Keep it up!

  .. of course!

My birthday celebrations are going to fall under 3 x SW weeks as I will have to go on a different day this week - only 5 days after the last weigh :( . After that it's back on the straight and narrow, hopefully with no gain.. I was brought a delicious chocolate cake today so could hardly refuse a slice ;). Luckily I managed not to keep the remainder.
