What are you eating today? (v4)

Order yourself a latte, and a pastry (The virtual cinnamon buns are excellent today). And have a nice chat.

Mushrooms and spinach with poached egg on sourdough for breakfast. Satsumas and sausage roll for lunch.

Freezer chilli with rice for dinner and potentially some posh chocolate from the deli for dessert.

Didn't eat much of interest in the last week. Oh apart from my one Christmas dinner out :) pecorinao and pea croquettes, garlic aili, pea shoots, then, wild mushroom pithivier, pearl barley, rocket pesto and, a bit bizzarely, chips. Dessert was Christmas pudding with whipped cream and a nice tart berry compot.

Did ok in France yesterday, considering...
Had breakfast of scrambled eggs, a selection of breads with butter and homeade apricot jam, (why didn't I eat my croissant?! Doh.) and then some fromage frais with compot and toasted oats (I think). I didn't eat the pretty bowl of fruit. I am not used to any breakfast, never mind this much.
A very late lunch was flammekueche with butternut squash.
Ate some junky, but lovely frangipane things in the Euroshuttle train on the way home. Delicious baguette and salty French butter, then a tiny Bonne Maman dessert when we got home.
Today I was going to do stuffed mini pumpkins (cheese, sage, creme fraiche, I think. Maybe s-d toms.) but couldn't get into the pumpkins. Too hard. I am roasting them whole and, if they are edible, will do something with them tomorrow. So, instead, I am having a Waitrose ready meal 'Italian Macaroni Cheese with Cauliflower & Squash', which I was meant to have for lunch, but it got too late.

Home alone this weekend :tu:

Cup of tea in bed
Toast and marmalade with more tea.
Shopping then coffee when I got home.
Lunch was beetroot and ricotta arancini from the RTC, tasteless.
More tea and a couple of mini mince pies from M & S, delicious.
Dinner was my favourite lentil stew with sesame rice.
J hates it. :D

Last night we had fillet steak with I.O.W garlic farm garlic butter with fondant potato, greens and slow roast tomatoes.

Tonight was a fridge use up of sautéed mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, peppers, thick cut ham and shallots with rice and more of the garlic butter. Tasted nicer than it sounds!

We bought some chocolate and pistachio cannoli from a farm shop at the weekend and that has been desert each night since.

It’s my birthday and our wedding anniversary over the coming days so lots of lovely food and eating out planned.

Porridge with stewed plums and Greek yogurt
Cheddar and piccalilli (made by my canine friend) on wholemeal (made by me)
We are off for a beer shortly so I made a chilli last night and we will have it when we get back.
We could be sensible and serve it with rice, but we do walk past the chippy on the way home.....

Went out last night - just Zizzi, but rather nice. Aubergine rotolo in a smoky tomato sauce with cheese. Venezuelan cafe for lunch today. Scrambled egg with peppers and herbs and spices, arepa, queso blanco, black beans. Waitrose sour cherry mince pie with squirty mascarpone (silly purchase in France.)

Dinner ended up being a cheese board. Some Wilde's Rebellion, some Brie with truffles bought in Montreuil-sur-Mer, a semi hard cheese with peppercorns, also bought in the Montreuil fromagerie (can't remember it's name and no label) and some Stilton. My husband tells me he doesn't like Stilton and never has?! We've been together for nearly 24 years...

Tea and biscuits in bed :tu:
A rasher of bacon, a poached egg and a couple of slices of toast.
Tea and a mince pie soon
6 of us are heading into town for music tonight and we are eating before the gig.
I have ordered a fish stew so I'm looking forward to it.
The others have chosen pork chop, venison bourgignonne, hake, and belly pork casserole.

It's a pub but their food is usually pretty good.

That's very amusing Herbi! Love the food you've had :chops:. I was presented with a Waitrose sloe gin mince pie yesterday, very rich but delicious. Everything I have eaten lately seems to be cobbled together from the freezer and fridge remains. I am still trying to keep carb and sugar down (the mince pie was a treat!).

Enjoy tonight WW!

I had a Waitrose hint of lemon one (another Heston) today. I enjoyed that too. I was going to make some, but haven't got round to it... along with the German spice biscuits and more sausage rolls. Too busy tomorrow. Ah well. Probably setting myself up for annoyance, offering my mother anything homemade. I shall do my best to make an Ecclefechan tart for Burns Night. (Might make things after Christmas when I get back, too.)

Driving home yesterday and not much food. Sticky toffee pudding trifle before I left.
At home, after a 5 hours drive, I had cheat's shakshuka (using a tin of really rather nice (Cassegrain) aubergine a la Provencale, with smoked paprika and lots of black pepper, and a bit of extra mature cheddar scattered on top - feta might have been better ;) ) Then a piece of Christmas cake.

We had that and then Tesco creme brulee for dessert.

I am definitely on the cliched health kick this January :D After a fantastic Christmas we went to Lanzarote a couple of days later so I am really feeling the effects of long lunches and too much wine.

The last few days we’ve had roast chicken with ratatouille and new potatoes. Salads with hummus and pitta. Lots of fruit. Greens soup with a few bits of blue cheese on top.

OH has bought sausages for tomorrow eve so we’ll have to think of a healthy-ish way to serve those.

Sunday had a Zizzi lunch - aubergine rotolo.
scone with clotted cream and jam later
dinner left too late, and ended up being a tiny Lidl Chistmas pudding and custard. (Very boozy :o Unpleasant sensation. I guess I am very sensitive to it.)

Yesterday lunch was an Ethiopian box of various hot vegetarian things.
Dinner left rather late again. I made some cornbread and just had that, warm, with butter.

Last night was paneer and pees in a tomato sauce. Sounds rubbish, but it hit the spot.
lunch today: Abokado poached egg, avocado, kale, grains, coriander and other salad veg with a soy and sesame dressing. Delicious, but took 15 minutes to eat. No wonder cows spend all day eating.

We went with that! :tu: Thanks

Friday we had steak with garlic greens, slow oven roasted thyme tomatoes and a few potatoes.

Yesterday we had a family party at home for Gabriella’s first birthday. We did platters of antipasti, cheese, fruit, salads, a whole ham, new potatoes, lots of sweet goodies, champagne and cake!

Leftovers for lunch today. Pub dinner with friends today and I had the mixed roast which was ok.

Tomorrow we’ll be having baked ham, cheese and spinach pancakes (using the last leftovers) with a green salad on the side.

Tonight we’d planned a lovely birthday dinner but I was called to collect Lilia from school as she wasn’t well so it all went out of the window.

Food eaten has been sporadic and most of us have eaten separately at different times...Heinz tomato soup, plain crackers, slightly stale birthday cake, Spanish rice with prawns and chorizo, bits and pieces grabbed from the fridge. Will attempt the birthday dinner in a day or two!

Sorry to hear about Lillia, OMCO. I hoep she feels better soon.
I hade lemon and ricotta 'posh' pasta from Ocado last night. Smelt like washing up liquid but tasted nice. Nice but not amazing...! had really good bread (Boule) and hime made marmalade with French marin butter for 'dessert'.
Only other notable meal this week was lunch at the Eagle on Farringdon road. Burrata with a warm salad of roast plums (gorgeously sweet and sour) and roast vegetables with some leaves (not warm!)

Tried to get into Zedel's for lunch today and glad we were refused. Instead lunch at the Soho branch of Brindisa. We had big green olives and bread, a cheese board, Spanish omelette (a really good one), Pisto Manchego - tomato & courgette 'pisto', olive toast, poached egg, and a pumpkin puree thing with enoki mushrooms - deeply comforting.

Your Spanish food sounds wonderful Herbi! As does the spinach and feta pie :chops:

Kids party last night and we didn’t fancy the planned take away after so we had a baked eggs dish with roast peppers from a jar, feta, basil, toasted pine nuts, a drizzle of chilli sauce and some crusty bread.

We should have had our best friends round for dinner tonight but they own a bar and their manager called in sick so they had to work unfortunately! So we cooked the food anyway - with plenty of leftovers for tomorrow! Roast stuffed duck with rosti potatoes, tender stem broccoli and a plum and port sauce. Sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream afterwards. We also have a cheese but I think we’ll save it for tomorrow.

Breakfast was scrambled eggs with potato cakes and roast vine tomatoes.

Lunch at the restaurant at the gym which was a random selection between the four of us of courgette fritters, halloumi burger, side salad and crab cakes.

Best friends who had to cancel last night popped round this evening and we cooked an impromptu dinner of leftover duck noodles with stir fried veg, peanuts, spring onions and chilli. Cheese after...no idea what it was :D Something soft, oozy and brie like (but not brie) from the deli which was pasteurised (friend is pregnant). Very nice anyway so will have to buy again!

Tonight we had lamb biryani plus a chilli free version for the girls. Will have the last of the cheese from the weekend for desert.

Lunch yesterday was a 'not tuna and sweetcorn sandwich from M&S. It didn't taste remotely fishy... was it supposed to?
Quite a bit of chocolate. A banana.
Dinner was nachos. (Home made. Trashy but quite nice.)
Today, two Lotus mini frangipani things mid morning.
Lunch was a baked potato with x mature cheddar and sweetcorn, various herbs and smoked paprika. Then two mince pies with single cream. Still have a few left.
'Dinner' was sultana bran.
I think I need to on on a sugar free month (or diet.)

We are having a Christmas dinner today. I got a frozen turkey crown reduced in Tesco’s for a fiver after Christmas so I put it in the freezer.

I don’t usually buy a crown and definitely not a frozen one, but thawed it looks ok so we will give it a whirl and see what it tastes like.

I have been having a discussion with my parents about how the turkeys we have these days are so much moister and tastier than in years past when my granny cooked Christmas dinner ( I think she put the turkey on in the early hours and it was always cooked to death - dry and horrid), but we can’t decide if it’s because we cook it differently or we are buying a better bird. So this is a bit of a taste test, same cooking method a la Phil Vickery (basically steaming) a mass produced frozen product versus our locally reared farm turkey. The price difference is around £50, although the frozen crown was reduced, but even at full price it’s a £40 plus difference.

Will report back.
