Only available on FB this week so I've C&P'd it.

The Ambridge Observer

Something a bit different this week. Normal service resumes on Sunday!
Ambridge Life: July 2017
Call the cops: Jill’s halo slips at last
When Jill Archer says there is more to life than fresh coffee and lemon drizzle, you know the Ambridge universe has shifted darkly on its axis.
And sure enough, after 60 blameless – some would say irritatingly saintly – years in Ambridge, the matriarch of Brookfield found herself detained at PC Harrison Burns’s pleasure, arrested for common assault with a flapjack.
The victim, a foghorn-voiced celebrity chef, claimed the missile, thrown by Jill during a protest against food waste, nearly had her eye out. This came as a huge shock to the Archer family, who had thought that Aunty Christine Barford’s scones were the only dangerous baked goods in the village.
But Jill’s brush with the law was a trifle (or, as fellow food militant Kirsty Miller might put it, an over-priced amuse-bouche), compared to the sad business of Oliver Sterling’s return from Italy, clutching a rucksack containing the ashes of his beloved wife Caroline.
At her hastily arranged memorial ceremony we learned that Peggy Woolley, whose late husband Jack took Caroline on as manager of Grey Gables Country Club, at first thoroughly disapproved of her. No surprise there: disapproval is Peggy’s default mode. And Shula revealed that she and Caroline had once deprived the whole of Grey Gables of hot water by diverting the supply to the outdoor pool for a glorious swim. What japes!
Poor Oliver, stricken by the sudden loss of his soulmate, held it together admirably, apart from an outburst of grief-fuelled rage at the Grundys’ casual neglect of Caroline’s beloved Grange Farm. Clarrie Grundy, who has had a lifetime of clearing up after her menfolk, wrote her landlord a heartfelt letter of apology and spent days shifting pigs, ferrets and rusty machinery to host the ceremony in the garden Caroline had planted.
All was forgiven, but once the formalities were over, Oliver sank into rudderless despair, nursing coffees (or ‘cappuccini’ as Lynda Snell would say) in the Bridge Farm tea room. Emma Grundy, showing uncharacteristic empathy, persuaded husband Ed to take Oliver out for a walk. Ed, who had mended Caroline’s favourite jug ‘just like she mended me, so you can’t hardly see the damage’, told Oliver there was plenty of time to decide where to live or where to inter Caroline’s ashes.
‘When did you get so wise, Ed?’ Oliver wondered – a question that no male Grundy has ever been asked before.
If Oliver does feel like house-hunting, he could do worse than Woodbine Cottage, which Christine Barford is selling to make her permanent home with Peggy Woolley, a prospect that delights Christine (Peggy, not so much).
Christine’s cottage is worth a pretty penny, a fact that did not escape Matt Crawford, who flattered her into attending a posh presentation for his bloodstock business. Despite Justin Elliott’s best efforts, Matt is still hanging around his fiancée Lilian like a whiff of stale cigar smoke – and worryingly, Lilian seems to feel sorry for her ex-con, expat ex.
Meanwhile, Woodbine’s current tenants, Fallon Rogers and PC Harrison Burns, are buying a home of their own. It turns out Harrison has a secret stash of savings, enabling their improbable first step onto the housing ladder. Perhaps he collected a bounty on Jill Archer’s head.

I'm not sure you will be able to see this as some of the FT stuff is hidden behind a Paywall but it's just been tweeted. Very good financial advice I thought.

We have all identified that most of the problems afflicting the various strands of the Archer family at the moment have threads leading back to Matt Crawford, haven't we ... ?

And we do all remember how Matt hated the Archer family with a vengence, not just Lilian's loyalty to them, but their closeness and mutual support in time of trouble ... when he had no family at all ... don't we?

    from me.

Mr R and I were discussing more or less the same thing over lunch, as we do. The main topic was if THE WEDDING will go ahead and will there be a fatal accident on the bucking bronco?? Very suprised that everyone else in the entirely locally inhabited restaurant were not discussing the same topic
