Yikes!
We elect local councillors then to, mine came round to ask about local issues affecting us

You go out to buy a T shirt in M&S after your meeting, and the world goes mad.... :?

I think she reckons that neither Corbyn nor Sturgeon can get their ducks in a row fast enough so, yes she will expect a stronger mandate

I've been out all day and only heard about it when I read a post on Facebook. I think it caught everyone on the hop ... it's going to be exciting I think, I don't think that Brexit is the foremost of worries in ordinary people's minds but am not sure that all politicians totally realise that.

Me neither. I heard the news on the radio when I was in a charity shop in Halifax this morning. A Cat Rescue one, it was.

Going to be an interesting few weeks, isn't it! I will, of course, be voting!

It will be an even more interesting few weeks if people wake up to the fact that this is a General Election, not just a vote to give May a mandate for Brexit. If people start thinking about the government's record on NHS, Social Care, Education etc, it might not be plain sailing. I hope the opposition parties seize the opportunity!

For a moment there I thought we were on the Joke Thread. ;)

Sadly Suelle, I think it will be all about Brexit, the rapidly increasing gap between the haves and have nots will continue as usual. At every election since 1979, the country has voted for the destruction of the public sector, I can't see that changing.

As someone who has always been a bit geeky when it comes to news/politics, I'm surprised at myself now turning off the news. Like Zosherooney, if I paid for our licence I'd want a refund.

for the first time in my life i am considering tactical voting.
when i got home from shopping yesterday i asked my partner if we could have a chat about who we would vote for just in case we just cancelled each other out (although i think we may vote the same way anyway). he said that he was thinking about a tactical vote - i said that was what was running through my head, too.

Sadly, I've never lived in an area where tactical voting would make a difference to the outcome - even if every voter who didn't support the incumbent MP's party did it!

In my younger days I was dead against tactical voting but gradually changed my mind as modern politics became less principled. Have tactical voted a few times. Perhaps if more people did the same it might make a difference. (fingers crossed emoji)

I think a lot of people will be using tactical voting - which could produce results they really don't want. This certainly did seem to catch everyone on the hop. I am a fan of proportional representation, even more so now. I really don't see how we will move forward without it, we desperately need an injection of new blood and ideas.

I am on a committee where recently a mainstay died, another was suspended and we were left with a small number of willing people, without the same expertise, to work extra hard to try and keep the ship afloat. I see similarities in our current election choices.

I am rather tired of the clips of Brenda from Bristol.

I am not sure that the AV alternative would have provided a better mix in Parliament. It would probably have been a fairer representation though, it can't have been any worse!

Please explain tactical voting in the context of an election. How can I vote tactically if I have absolutely no control how anybody else votes? Nobody has any control over how anybody votes, except illegally with postal votes.

For once i am thinking of voting tactically. This is that last time we will be able to vote in UK elections unless they (whoever they might be) revokes the 15 year rule. We didn't think we would be able to vote but renewed our registration so we can.

There is absolutely no way a candidtae from my preferred party will be voted in in the , where we are registered. But the present MP, although from the wrong party as far is I am concerned is in fact a very good Local MP and I think parliment will need all the good honest people as they can muster.

At least one question we asked each other this morning has been answered. Will Osbourne be re-elected? He has proved to have more scruples than we credited him with.

Meanwhile back in France :terrified: :terrified:

a tactical vote is a vote of blind hope.
it does not mean you have to be illegal, dictate how other people vote etc.
it does mean that if a body of the electorate in a constituency do not want the main party in that constituency to get in and the combined votes cast for the other candidates were used on the candidate of the major opposition party in the constituency then there's a higher chance the incumbent will fall. if enough people are dissatisfied with the status quo the chances of tactical voting working increase.
it is still a personal and private vote.

*in a system of proportional representation the 'first past the post' can be overtaken by the 'second past the post' or even third, if the combined place score of each is taken into consideration - a much fairer system as even if you don't get your first choice you may well get your second choice.

in the case of cornwall, there was a massive swing, for some reason, to the conservative party in the last election, blue-ing out a once mainly liberal/lib-dem heartland. why this happened is a mystery to me. it caused the county to come up with the pro brexit vote - something for which cornwall (as top of the list) may regret in the future when the eu 'poverty money' disappears and is not replaced in a post brexit country. the same funding will also be denied to the second poorest region in northern europe, west wales.

* this is only one of the pr systems available and the way we voted for major officials at school.

as a matter of interest, ratatouille, does where you voted in the last place you lived in the uk count as your 'constituency' or is it allocated in a different way?

Yes, as scully says tactical voting is quite simple
If your constituency always returns party X, and preventing this is your main objective, although you prefer party Z, you vote for party Y which is far more likely to defeat X. And cross your fingers and hope there are enough like minded people in the area for Y to oust X.

Zosherooney, OH was due to go out today with a friend who has an absolutely shocking cold - you're not alone, small comfort I know.

As for Brisket, if I remember rightly last year you wanted to be in control of your own kitchen whilst I was happy to have a whole bunch of people telling me what to do. Could be a man thing I suppose. ;)

As for coat sharing, if you put your arm in the left sleeve and I the right, would that work? Certainly be cosy!

Thanks Sue. I wasn't sure whether it was the same as it is here or something to do with your system.

I usually vote green, but it's not much use to do it when I vote for the mayor, because we won't get a green one. So, on that occasion I vote Social Democrat to prevent a Christian Democrat gaining the post.

So there, now you know the colour of my knickers (so to speak ... ;) ;) ;) )

And no, I didn't mean to get too political.

Just for the heck of it I went looking for an image of lime geen knickers with purple dots ... you can only get purple with lime green dots ... should I order this???
