I loved Oriental City, it was the first place that I ate sushi, which of course was freshly made.

We went again today. The website and posters say it opens at 10.30 am but at 11.30 today there were only two stalls actually open, the rest all said they'd be open for 12. Most managed that but a few were still not open at 12.15 and later.
This meant that queues were pretty big as a lot of people arrived earlier given the stated opening times.
Some stalls were really slow at taking orders, so the queues were long and slow moving but once orders were placed, fulfillment was reasonably fast.
Still delicious but I am hoping they a) do start opening earlier, as per the hall's stated opening hours and b) get quicker at taking orders...

Good, she seems to hold somewhat same opinion as me.
I didn't bother trying the restaurant downstairs, only the actual food court itself.

Ooooh, just read this (and saw your recommendation on FB too PP :tu: ) ... and now my mouth is watering ... what about a mini meet there ? Not somewhere to go solo as we need plenty of choices to try ;)

Jay makes it sound mind blowing delicious :chops: :chef: :hungry:

Form an orderly queue please

The Court phoned me last week to say that they had had a couple of people drop out and could I sit a couple of weeks early, i.e.starting tomorrow. :o I explained about my car accident and the bruising/whiplash I am suffering and the guy said that in that case would I like to choose a date in the next year when I'd like to do it. I chose November. :D

I might come depending on the date chosen. It says it shares a car park with Morrisons - can you get a space or is it stupid to even consider taking a car?

The old Oriental City shared a car park with Asda. I didn't think there was a Morries round there. The website is rubbish and no help at all. Parking was quite easy in those days though.

I can't 100% commit to anything these days but hopefully would be able to come.

I'm sure Kavey and Pete can advise on parking

I was going to suggest a date, but as it's August I have few lunch time bookings
Of Fridays, 01 September the best for me, so I'll suggest that

The Morrisson's is next to the ASDA and their car park is huge.

OC didn't share a car park with ASDA so far as I recall, but they they were next door to one another. You had to go past the Asda car park into the OC one (and still do) So if Morrissons was full you could easily park in Asda's which is even larger as I recall.

Kavey can't do Wednesdays.

I haven't many free days so as I said, I will just come if it happens to be arranged on a day that I can. The only free Friday I have in Sept is 22nd :(.

Thanks for the car park info Rio.

I think I have to post a disclaimer here. I must be the only person who was not a fan of Oriental City. Their promotion of Sega and it's gaming products at inflated prices for children meant that after my first visit meant I never took them again. I taught many Chinese/Japanese children at the time (in the area) and the parents, without exception, thought that the prices were too high. A couple of my (Japanese) gym friends have said they will go to have a look at the reincarnation but will not become regulars unless it's very special.

It's a big car park. We've not had a problem even on our two weekend visits.

Interesting. Most of the visitors I knew to the original Oriental City were regulars, and many of them were either born in the various countries of East Asia represented in the food hall, or their parents or grandparents were. And all the people I knew felt the prices in the OC food court were fair given that costs for food and ingredients is much higher in UK than it is for those same items in Asia. Only those expecting prices to match those in Asia seemed to think them too high and that never seemed reasonable at all. I can't comment on the SEGA thing, never saw anything of that at all in the food court area itself or the supermarket and rarely visited the other shops with the exception of Doki for pottery.

Likewise, most of the people I saw in my two visits to the new place are locals. I would agree that the pricing in the new place is too high, but then again, if the businesses are packed out, it's a case of supply and demand isn't t?

The car park seems to be for both sites, and has official signs within the car park showing where to go to enter Bang Bang Oriental.

I do hope there isn't always going to be music. I hope they go off that idea. I loathe muzak. Live music is fine at an eaterie if you're expecting it but as background it's an absolute no-no for me.

In the interests of research I'll go next week with my sis.

I mentioned 1st Sept, as Kavey mentioned Fridays and that's the first that would I think suit both her and me
However nobody seems inclined to say firmly Yes to that date, or No and propose an alternative, so .... I can be flexible as not a lot on at lunch times currently

Me and Pete should be up for that date.
I'd advise we meet for noon, or even a little earlier, so we can grab a table and get into queues as soon as places open!

Music, sadly, is loud pop crap.

I broached this with my sis. It was a firm no. Her foodie daughter, aged 26, had gone last week for a farewell meal to a Chinese friend. My niece had not realised it was anything special but enjoyed the food. She, Laura, said she is not going back because the music made it impossible for any kind of conversation. (Unlike her mother and me she's not a musician either).

Bang Bang are going to have to sort that out I think.

Perhaps the loud music is to encourage everyone to eat up and go, leaving seats for the next customer ? ;) Not for a relaxing lunch and chat afterwards then :(
