Current situation in Venezuela

Postby karadekoolaid » July 31st, 2017, 12:38 pm

You will probably have seen articles in the press on Venezuela.
Things are not good.
I`m not a politician, and to be honest, believe politicians to be the lowest form of life, but here`s what happened:
In December 2015, we had elections for the National Assembly. The opposition won an overwhelming victory, but the government immediately took (illegal) steps to dilute the NA `s authority. In March this year, the president, Nicolás Maduro, announced that he would seek to rewrite the constitution by establishing a " Constituent Assembly". All hell broke loose, and protests began across the country.
We now have over 100 days of continuous protests; ever more severe repression from the National Guard, over 100 deaths of innocent, unarmed protesters and a fall in popularity for the government.
Last 16th July, the opposition held an informal "plebiscite"; people voted to demand respect for the current constitution, for the support of the armed forces and to demand that the president desist from establishing a new assembly or constitution, on the grounds that both would be (a) illegal and (b) against the will of the people. Over 7.5 million people voted in favour.
Yesterday, about 2.4 million people voted "in favour" of a new constitution. Many of these voters were obliged to vote, under the threat of losing their jobs, their livelihood, their housing. At some unearthly hour of the morning, the government announced that " over 8 million" had voted in favour of the new constituent assembly. Simply put, the vote was fraudulent and the president is now officially a dictator, backed by a corrupt, repressive, drug-dealing Armed Forces which evidently has no interest whatsoever in democracy as we know it.
Today and from now on, the repression, the assassinations, the unlawful arrests, AND the protests, will intensify. God help us all!

Unimaginable situation in what was once a prosperous country. Thoughts and prayers are with the Venezuelan people, and all those living there as they try to get their food and medicines. Thanks for the update, Clive. Keep safe!

I don't know if you heard it Clive, but PM Radio 4 did what I thought was a measured reort. I do hope it was. Just wondering if there is absolutely anything we can do - even nutty things like writing to MPs or sending little bits and pieces to you and your OH ?

The seizing of the mayor and tge other politician does not look good, it seems to have lined up international opinion, even Trump, against Maduro which is good but I'm not sure it helps Venezulans

Clive I know its a fairly futile gesture on my part but I was furious this morning at a report that several members of the labour party are asking Corbyn to retract his apparent enthusiasm for your dear "leader".

Our MP happens to be labour but is a very good constituency MP so I have emailed her this morning asking her to add her dismay and my personal disapproval if the report is true.

Yes, Rats - Corbyn was/is a great fan of Chávez and his ghastly successor. Let`s see what he says, because anything less than utter condemnation of the vile, dictatorial acts taking place here is unacceptable.
Trump has placed Maduro on the "International Thug" list... but I have a feeling there`s more to come.
That Sunday`s vote was a blatant fraud is clear as a bell. We SAW the voting stations, all day long. Most of them were empty. There`s no way that over 8 million people voted, NO WAY. About 2 million, if that includes all those unfortunated public employees who were forced to vote or lose their livelihood.
The former mayor and the opposition leader who were kidnapped yesterday are being held in a military prison. Figure that one out. All the detainees from the protest marches are being processed by military, not civilian, courts. Most of those arrested are kids, students, under 30...beaten, tortured and mistreated by thugs in uniform and a president with a brain like a chicken.

The UK news today is full of pressure on Corbyn to condemn Maduro, evidently he's been silent on Venezuela for some time
However, his ally Chris Williamson was on Newsnight last night (I didn't see it but it's all over the papers) condemning sanctions and calling for talks that would stop "right wing opposition" (sic) from organising street protests, so I don't think he really understands the situation but only sees it through red tinted (socialist) spectacles
Stay safe Clive

Corbyn. McDonnell, Abbott and (of course) Red Ken all supported Chávez. And to be honest, in the beginning, some of his programmes looked interesting. Literacy programmes, care for the aged, better health care, housing for the poor....
The only problems were 1) he didn`t count on the price of a barrel of petrol dropping from $100 to $30. 2) He didn`t select his Project Managers on the basis of skill/efficiency - only on whether they were cronies/fellow military. 3) He didn`t count on the absolutely filthy levels of corruption, which effectively siphoned off all the budget before the programmes had got started.
As for the "Right-Wing Opposition" - I`ve been hearing that tired old tale ever since I was at university, mostly from the Socialist Worker`s Party. Yawn.
What amazes me most, however, is how Chávez started out screaming vile invective at the so-called "oligarchs" and swearing to destroy them. These days, the "oligarchs" are all from his own party, filthy rich with ill-gotten gains, and hopelessly nouveau-riche in their lifestyles. Just like the pigs in Animal Farm!

Well I`d rather have Trump help us out than Putin
It just goes to show that businessmen, in general, do NOT make good Presidents/politicians. Instead of saying "We condemn the Maduro regime and will do everything in our power to bring back democracy", the idiot comes up with " We´ll invade you if necessary".
It`s often what you DON`T say that is more effective.
Mind you, I`d just love to see about 100 marines beat the living daylights out of these arrogant, stupid, corrupt, nouveau-riche generals and their sycophantic subordinates! 8-) 8-)

Like everyone says, I have been thinking about you and your family.

Each solution seems less palatable than the one before, but there is certainly no easy option. Where money and greed breed such callous contempt of human decency, only tough actions will effect change.

I expect, in addition to daily fear and frustrations, your very livelihood has been affected, too.

I can only echo previous comments, 'stay safe'.
