Who knows about colonic irrigation?

Postby Pepper Pig » September 21st, 2017, 8:51 pm

Aside from bloody Gwyneth Paltrow that is!

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyl ... -she-right

Is it the same as the enema I was given circa 1981 when I gave birth to my firstborn? ;)

Ooh, I couldn't personally go through it myself. Having had to have an endoscopy down the throat twice was enough to put me off someone ever probing into my innards for life! Never again. I think up the rear end would be easier. It probably wouldn't affect breathing!

Why do you ask PP?

I can't say I know much about it but believe that the biggest difference between the enema in the labour ward and the modern 'therapy' is that the liquid is inserted and the matter neatly removed through a pumped tube rather than a bit of old hose with a large jug and a dash to the loo. My first experience was much earlier than 1981 ... it was a small cottage hospital with one loo and they gave enemas to three of us at the same time .. :? :? :? .

I seem to remember that Princess Diana was said to have this kind of therapy regularly .. I thought it was something that some with eating disorders go for and those who like to be squeaky clean for other reasons . I didn't know about all those side effects, I'll stick to the prunes.

Colonic irrigation as far as,I know (I'm doing this mainly from memory) has been around since the 1930s, Evelyn Waugh made jokes about it

It differs from an NHS enema insofar as it is not necessary, it goes too far up, and is usually performed by someone who doesn't understand sterile technique

As the gastroenterologist in the article says, in terms of proper evidence based medicine, it has no proven benefit

But for some reason people prefer to believe a self-deluding blonde actress than the medical establishment

There is not a cat in hell's chance I'd let a self proclaimed practitioner / therapist do something so dangerous to me, I might agree if prescribed by a member of the Royal Society of Gastroenterologists

Why is the Guardian giving GP the publicity she craves?

far from having no proven benefit, i had a patient, many years ago, who got septicaemia and died from being given an (nhs) enema.
why would anyone, unnecessarily, put something in to somewhere designed to push stuff out?

do you really need to know pepper pig? if so, why? - or is it just a rhetorical question?

ps. i couldn't be arsed to click on the link...

A newspaper's main aim in life is to be sold. 'Celebrities' sell newspapers, so their opinions are good copy and grist to the mill, no matter how self-deluding those opinions might be.

Having recently passed a major milestone (as it were :D ) there is a reasonable chance I'll be offered an inspection of the lower giblets. I don't think that involves enemas, but fasting and drinking some jollop to clear the pipework. My main concern would be having to go without food for so long.

Last time I was in Neijmegen they had a BOGOF deal on them... That's about as much as I can say.

Doesn't it muck up your gut flora/needed bacteria?! I'd have thought Gwyneth Paltry would be up on that. I imagine she doesnt like the idea of having anything as not nice as poo inside her..

The idea that GP is "up" on anything except her own vanity and the lovely lolly rolling in from her Goop! "wellness" website is a sick joke
She picks up bits of fashionable pseudoscience and makes them her own, regardless of the arguments of real science
Why all these wellness imbeciles don't understand the concept of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" I don't know. The human body has evolved over millions of years to be largely self-correcting

You've got to question the professional dreams of someone would wish to embark on doing this as a career move.
