GOODWILL AND CUSTARD!!!!!!

Postby Grasshopper » December 1st, 2017, 8:45 pm

Goodwill and custard! Yes, it's the first of December and time to open our NEW WILDFOOD ADVENT CALENDAR!
This year, it's all about Random Factoids. Behind each door is a Random Factoid - not all of them associated with the season.
So, without further ado, what do we all shout?
'WHAT'S BEHIND THE DOOR TODAY?'

Right - here goes. *opens door*

We have a rather seasonal one to start with. Did You Know that Charles Dickens, who wrote 'A Christmas Carol', lovely story, isn't it! Well, Charles Dickens modelled Scrooge on a man named John Elwes, who, believe it or not, once served as an MP. Although he liked gambling, he was VERY tight fisted, and despite owning a large house, which he neglected, he was sometimes quite happy to sleep under a hedge. I can't imagine Ebenezer doing that!

So there we have it, our first Random Factoid!

More tomorrow!

Ooh, how exciting! :bounce:

I haven't managed to acquire a calendar this year so now shan't bother!

Grassy - is this a new thing? Will you be opening all the doors? However it works, I love it!

Goodwill and Custard!!!!!!
It's Day 2 of our Wildfood Advent Calendar, sooooooooo

'WHAT'S BEHIND THE DOOR TODAY?'

Right - here we go! *opens door*

Ooh this is interesting. Did You Know that before he became a hangman, William Calcraft worked as a pie salesman. He served as hangman for 45 years, but it wasn't until he made way for William Marwood, that we got the more humane 'Long Drop' method of hanging.

A little bit gruesome, I admit - but these ARE Random Factoids ;)

I can add a bit to that
William Calcraft was Britain's most prolific executioner, and because he favoured the short drop, which means he wasn't really very efficient, :( Dickens eventually refused to watch him in action

Why do I know this?
Because he's buried about 500 metres from here and last weekend I went on a guided history walk that visited his grave

Timely or what?

His distant relative is a member of metal band Amulet (not sure which, think it's the singer). The band visited the grave and wrote a song called The Hangman about him

Grassy - think the Advent calendar is a brilliant idea! :hi5:

Here we are again!
So ......

WHAT'S BEHIND THE DOOR TODAY?

Here goes ....... *opens door*

Ooh....... Elephants may NOT be afraid of mice - that's a MYTH, folks, but they ARE afraid of a creature much SMALLER than a mouse. Yes, believe it or not, elephants are afraid of BEES! Some farmers protect their crops with barriers featuring beehives. Elephants back away when they hear the bees buzzing. Well, wouldn't YOU be afraid of a sting-packing insect that could crawl up your nose? ;)

'Till next time! ;)

Ho ho ho! Nice one Grassy!

I suppose the worst case of pogonophobia could possibly be David Bellamy dressed in red with a white fake beard on top of real beard saying 'Snuffle under my undergrowth for your Christmas present oh beard fearer!' That would be enough to leave beard fearers scarred for life!

I suppose if you can swivel your head like that, why weigh it down with ears when probably you can point the one that you do have in the direction you need at any given time. Fascinating!

I'm not massively keen on the Lindt bars, though I think that's just personal taste, they are good quality
I preferred Suchard but they don't seem to sell it in the UK any more
And of course, Toblerone

I think M&S do some Swiss chocolate?

I do like Lindor though, it should be sickly it's so rich but isn't

I didn't know what you meant by Lindt balls but then I saw the advert. :chops:

I have to say that for me, our German friend Ritter Sport is my chocolate bar of choice, but this may be more about the filling than the chocolate itself. My favourite is marzipan. My next flavour to try is peppermint which they just so happen to sell in my post office....

The top marathon men are completing the course in very little over 2 hours. It's staggering, that they can run for this length of time at just less than half the fastest speed of the World's top sprinter, isn't it?
