What Have They Done????????

Postby Grasshopper » February 8th, 2018, 8:47 pm

Have you seen the latest version of the weather section of the BBC news site? It USED to be nice & simple, but NOW look at it!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/0/2654993

Looks all complicated!

I read that there were complaints that some areas were always cloudy, whatever the real weather.

I don't like the percentage likelihood of rain feature - even on days that have stayed dry, there's been up to a 20% likelihood of rain. I realise the 2 situations aren't incompatible, but it's conditioning me to always expect to get wet when I go out.

It's very similar to the various weather apps, and I don't mind it

I much prefer the percentages for chance of rain to the various fudge factirs they used to have, makes much more sense to me

It doesn't look all that different to me. I like the changes. It would be nice to think it was going to be more reliable too!

At least the symbols don't fall off the map any more

They've done it like that here for quite a while. I'm afraid it isn't any more accurate. I think I read last year that meteo France were now taking their data from The Met Office these days.

They got the freezing fog correct this morning though!

I don't have any reason to mind what the weather does at the moment so I hadn't noticed the change. I don't watch weather reports, I just look out of the window! Of course when I had to drive into work every day it was a different matter. Saying that, no matter what the weather, I'd still have to drive in because it was expected. Do I not miss that!

It was a bit disconcerting, initially. I don't know. First the Guardian, and now this ;) I am curious though as to what percentage of likelihood of rain makes it more likely than not. Should be 50, surely, but doesn't seem to be. I was told it was to bring in line with the like of Apple apps. Anyway, Sunday looks nice :)

The only major issue that I have is the need to sign in to be able to store locations. As we frequently travel around the country to family and car meetings, I used to have the regular places stored as favourites. I don't want to sign in unnecessarily.

It totally threw me and confused me the first time I saw it, but after a few days, I think I'm getting used to it now. I check the forecast a lot. I really feel the cold, so need to know how many extra layers I need to put on. Also handy for whether (weather?!) or not I can hang the washing out! I find the BBC to be pretty accurate. Oh what a thrilling life I live!

It probably does work out roughly right, but like all risk based assessments you'd need a much bigger sample than your own observations

I haven't signed in, but I can't save favourite places. Otherwise it's the same.

Yes you always used to be able to save favourites in cookies without signing in, so they were only available on the device with the cookies
Now you can use the weather page without signing in, as you always could, but your favourites are stored in your account soyou have to be signed in to see them but you can sign in on any device. This kind of seems more logical to me, having you location data behind a password. No problem with signing in, IMO, you also need to access iPlayer radio now

My other locations are still there. I'm using an iPad and didn't have to sign in.

I love the % chance of rain! I mostly use an app on my ipad that has always shown that % for every two hour slot each day. Not that it's often correct, but I used to miss it when looking at the BBC one.
It always takes a while to learn the way around a new layout though, they're always a bit eye-boggling at first.
