Mini meet up in London at the end of May?

Order yourself a latte, and a pastry (The virtual cinnamon buns are excellent today). And have a nice chat.

Mini meet up in London at the end of May?

Postby Ratatouille » April 5th, 2018, 12:14 pm

We will be in London for a week at the end of May (25th to June 1st.) The Bank holiday is with family for a get together however we will be on our own from 29th-31st. Mr R is insistant that he MUST go to Kew archives on one day and probably the British Library so there is the possibilty of me having a totally free day on one of those 3 dates. We are staying at the Renaisance at St Pancras - having got a really good deal for the 4 nights via Eurostar.

I would absolutely love to see anyone who can meet up so any suggestions for dates and venues welcome and we'll try to coordinate. Please bear in mind I do no do the underground !

Count me in :tu: ... would be lovely to meet up with you Rats :bounce: Best day for me would be 30th as I am in the shop on the 29th and 31st, although the 31st could be doable ;)

I can do any of those, slight preference for the 30th here too but can manage the others

Any thoughts on where or what type of food?
Granary Square (the reconstructed area behind Kings Cross) might be a handy option, I know Rats doesn't like the Tube, but Soho and Marylebone are short bus hops from St Pancras (and I as I have to go past there to get into town I can volunteer my services as a native guide, if required)

I would be interested. I am free most of that week except for Tuesday 29th. Maybe Rats could tell us what kind of cuisine would be a treat and those in the know could recommend accordingly.

I'm happy with just about any cuisine - bar possibly French! I am perfectly happy to take a taxi. It looks like 30th seems a good day. I'm so looking forward to meeting those of you who can come. See you soon I hope

I'd like to pencil in the 30th. I'd be happy to meet up and will be glad to eat any cuisine. I'll eat anything these days, even French, although my first choice would be Indian. I have no idea on venues though. I'll keep my eye out on suggestions.

We need to think about both cuisine and location
There's time to do some research but good to start thinking
The new kid on the blick is Korean, which would be interesting maybe, but I don't have a specific recommendation, just avoid Bi Bim Bap (awful chain) or Judy Joo's Jinjuu (pricey, pretentious)
Here's a list of some
https://londonist.com/2018/01/london-s-best-korean-restaurants

For Indian I'd definitely recommend Darjeeling Express (very "in" but very friendly and prices reasonable) or Cafe Spice Namaste but that's not the easiest to get to. For a good conventional curry Chettinad on Percy Street (Fitzrovia, Tottenham Court Road station) is handy. And I'm sure everyone else has a favourite too!

For Middle Eastern I think Al Waha is hard to beat, and we'd be a small enough group this time, or I coukd track down a good Turkish (there are dozens but not all that well sited for transport)

There's a lot of buzz around Spanish food at the moment, with Jose Pisarro, Nieves Barragan, Eyre Bros et al, could look into that

And there's Chinese of course including Wildies' favourite dim sum :D
Thoughts?

Just to throw in some other stuff. I adore Henry Harris. Is this new place too Frenchified?

http://cheesenbiscuits.blogspot.co.uk/2 ... nwell.html

In that area too there is Moro and a few others.

http://moro.co.uk/

Bellanger? Fischers? The new Joe Allen's? And my favourite for lunch Café Murano.

Talking of Indian, the Dishoom at the Kings X plaza is very good. They might let you book midweek. ;)

I like Cafe Murano, anything Indian or, funnily enough, classic Brit. Not wild about Japanese and Thai, although I love bits it can be difficult because of the coconut.

Anything seafoody and I'm always up for Chinese. What's the name of the place that specialised in head to tail? Turkish sounds fun

French bistro I can do/get any day of the week. We could of course save that for a meet up here!

Keep the ideas coming.I am not at all sure what is expensive in the UK these days. What sort of price, minus drinks are we looking at?

OK, haven't been to many of these but all on my mental wishlist
Ceviche Soho - Peruvian seafood, I ate so well in Lima, and I like Martin Morales on TV
http://www.cevicheuk.com/soho

PP suggested Moro, good idea (near Sadler's Wells)
http://moro.co.uk

Been trying to get to St John, or its off shoot St John Bread and Wine (which might suit) for some time
https://stjohnrestaurant.com

I mentioned Darjeeling Express so here's a link
https://www.darjeeling-express.com

I mentioned Jose Pizarro, not cheap but boththe tapas bar and the Broadgate restaurantvlook interesting
https://josepizarro.com/jose-pizarro-broadgate/
Nieves Barragan has Sabor / Asado but you can't book Sabor and I think it is too expensive for this kind of group

Here's a link to Cafe Murano

I suppose the Gilbert Scott is more English than French. It looks lovely and I have certainly heard good things about it. It would mean you could have a lie-in too Rats!

I like the sound of most of the suggestions so far. My person preference steers away from Indian but anything is an adventure.

I've never been to Roast either Catherine though have heard of it - it looks pretty good (but can't see a set menu which might make the final bill well beyond the purse of some people).

Gosh that menu scribble is annoying. :o I’d love to go there but am a little bit worried that they open their lunch bookings three months in advance. Le Gavroche do that and we’ve never managed to get a table yet. :(

I can't quite commit now, but in principle I would like to.

I took my American cousins to Andrew Edmunds. It was very good, but it's quite small.

Last time I was in Quo Vadis I was on a table next to Sean Connery*. They infamously charged me £20 for a plate of asparagus (back in 2001) - the vegetarian option. They look a little more veggie friendly now.

*And OH had a pee next to him  Another guy asked SC for his autograph in the loo!!!

Jeremy Lee has taken over at Quo Vadis now ( maybe 10 years ago) Herbi and I believe the restaurant has moved across the road from where it was. I think Simon Hopkinson is involved in some capacity. Last time I was there he was “in”. They have also merged with Barrafina I believe. The stained glass is lovely and the food was ace last time I went. The only cloud was that Toby Young was on the next table. I didn’t ask him for his autograph!!! :o

I don't think most London restaurants require anything smarter than Zedel does these days, I quite miss dressing up to go out, but less cost and less laundry!

According to their website it is the same building since 1926, I remember reading Leoni's autobiography

I think then that it was divided up for Barrafina or one of them moved upstairs. I know I read something about it. The little grey cells don’t retain much these days.
