Hmm. I think the idea that the save the Lido campaign ruined the London Fields community is somewhat overblown. The first person I knew who moved from a flat in Stoke Newington to gentrify a house in London Fields, because property was cheaper there, did so in 1989 or 90, and of course joined the Lido campaign. It was always going to be the next place to get gentrified.
It's true though that Hackney has a paucity of pools and a really bad record on planning and maintenance. Funnily enough I'm well off for them, I can walk or hop on a bus to either Clissold or King's Hall, or I can take the Overground 4 stops to London Fields Lido (it's not quite local). I keep making resolutions to swim more and intend to develop a lido habit this summer.
