Pedants' Corner - a place to point out that ....

Order yourself a latte, and a pastry (The virtual cinnamon buns are excellent today). And have a nice chat.

Pedants' Corner - a place to point out that ....

I do wish the BBC Newsreader would stop telling us that "the first statue of a woman will be unveiled in Parliament Square ...."

There have been many other statues of named women ... _Daughters ... ell-statue .............

or do they mean that "the first statue of a woman to be erected in Parliament Square will be unveiled ..."?

But as OH said, it's good that she's being unveiled ... women shouldn't have to be veiled in this day and age

Interesting to note that a statue of General Gordon was removed and the one of Edith Cavell was erected in its place.

Heard one of my "favourites" today in Boots
The self service till occasionally says "Please wait for a colleague to assist you" That shifty looking youth is not my colleague thank you! Some department stores use the word colleague in announcements where the word staff would make sense but colleague certainly doesn't

And on the subject of TV chefs, I have recently been confused by chefs telling me to chop the onions, which would lead me to roughly dice them - except that they then produce bowl of perfect, evenly, sliced half moons of onion. Very different effectin the finished dish!
