Terrible behavior

Postby hickybank » April 30th, 2018, 8:08 am

I was walking on my local beach yesterday & there was a man & woman arguing right in front of a group of young children,
she started to hit him with her handbag then it really kicked off.
A police officer arrived & had to use his baton to restrain the man.
However the man managed to wrestle the baton from him & then proceeded to attack them both.
If this was not bad enough, a Crocodile then arrived & started to eat all the Sausages

My cousin and I were never allowed to forget that when she was 14 and I was 4 she lost me on the beach. She went up and down searching until the Professor suggested she might be looking for the little girl sitting enthralled on the edge of the crowd of children

I was there for several repetitions :)

Back in the early 80s I wrote a feminist version which was performed by a local Am Dram group ... it toured several of Suffolk's open air events and was even invited to one of the USAF air bases ...(very few of the airmen 'got it' )

By the way, at the end Punch was hauled up before the judge for trying to feed the baby to the crocodile so that he could go to the pub, and was sentenced to 'life' at the sink doing the washing up ;) :tu:

Isn't the Punch & Judy story bizarre. Rather grim really but I loved it as a child.

I have come across one in the last ten years, no idea where. They used to patrol fairs and agricultural shows, anywhere that there might be an audience I suppose.

From the Victoria and Albert Museum, this is quite an interesting read. Thanks for the original joke Hicky, I've learnt a lot from it.

We had one at the community festival about 20 years ago
I took the Professor a cuppa, he liked a very culturally mixed mob of children (which he got of course) because they see different parts of the story and keep each other interested and participating. They all loved it :D

Thanks for the V&A article, Tezza, I had not realised that Mr Punch was a culteral icon along with the Routemaster bus!

There was a show still being performed at the end of Llandudno pier a couple of years ago, it seemed very popular with a huge amount of children and parents watching.

Oh I :luv: Southwold Pier. I wonder if my mum could be persuaded to take littlest nephew there later this month. There have been talks of a day at the seaside as well as The Dunstable Downs. I'll suggest this!

Tezza - did you know that because of Pepys's diary entry, May 9 is considered to be Mr. Punch's birthday.

Well, you do now! ;)
