veg v sunflower oil in vegan cake ...

Postby KC2 » May 18th, 2018, 6:16 pm

Hi, at short notice, a vegan friend is coming over tomorrow and I want to make this cake: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/user/461479 ... lemon-cake

I only have sunflower (and olive) oil - no veg oil. Do you think the sunflower oil will be ok?

Thanks!!

I think both sunflower and veg oil are as tasteless as each other so I'd personally not worry which I used.

I used sunflower oil.
It took 50 mins to bake - see Chatterbox.
It looks nice but I haven't tasted it because I can't really take a half eaten cake to SFH's house tomorrow

I think so. I had a friend who made cakes which required oil rather than solid fat all the time and she always used sunflower. You just don't want anything with a strong flavour (such as olive).

I would automatically sub sunflower for unspecified veg oil, sunflower is virtually tastless veg oil not always, and sunflower is what I always have in the house

I'd have no worries about using sunflower oil, which is what I keep in stock.

Glad to hear that Sue, thx! I'm going to ice it this morning. I am slightly worried that it's going to be a bit dry and I kind of wish I'd done a drizzle ... but we'll see. Our road is having a street party so even if it's a bit dry I'm sure it'll get eaten up!

Hope you all had a good day yesterday! Glad the weather was so good for them!

The cake was a triumph - really tasty and moist - I needn't have worried, it didn't need the drizzle. Would thoroughly recommend the recipe. I just added a bit of extra lemon zest.

How was yours WW?

Well I took it to a family thing at SFH's house, along with a vegan fruit loaf.
It all went so it must have been OK.
I was a bit surprised to see vegan nephew eating a chicken sandwich though.
