who do they think they're fooling‽‽‽

Order yourself a latte, and a pastry (The virtual cinnamon buns are excellent today). And have a nice chat.

who do they think they're fooling‽‽‽

Postby scullion » October 22nd, 2018, 9:39 am

this is the second of two emails, saying the same thing, that i've received this morning, from similar addresses.
it's such a shame that they say they won't get back to me if i reply because i'd like to tell them that i haven't filled in my tax return yet - and that i won't be getting that much back anyway.
it's nice of them to thank me for using the transfer in french - nice touch.

this is the email, i think the expiry date shows that it's likely to be a disposable email account:-

I’ve been having similar mails from “TV licence”

One thing I’ve noticed is that if you get a genuine mail from a government department or even a fairly small business with whom you have an account they will always address you by the account name, not your email address or account number

So any mail that doesn’t have the expected version of your name is usually dodgy; I think it’s a useful second sanity check

I’ve been told by a reliable source that, although many scam emails are badly written by people who are not native english speakers, there are many that deliberately write the emails badly. This has been effective in weeding out the intelligent recipients who may reply to just string them along, which they see as a waste of their time. They really only want to get “genuine” replies from those that are less intelligent, greedy, scared, mentally frail or not computer literate.

...and, dissemination of email addresses can’t be illegal. I’ve been sending them to “Action Fraud” for some time now, and if anyone knows what’s illegal, it should be them!, :)

I wonder how many people fall for these. As has been said, it must be the more vulnerable members of society which is so sad and it must be lucrative enough to bother. I have had similar communications which look quite professional, often only with something small to ring alarm bells but I rarely respond to emails or phone calls which carry 'personal' information.

I cant say I´ve had any of those recently, but sóme five or six years ago, I actually cancelled an e-mail account because I was getting hundreds of the messages weekly!
They were usually
" My Dear Estimated Sir, My name is Obangwunka Knolobe. I am the wife of the late Chancellor of Matabeleland, whose fortune was estimated at $10,000,0000 . I am unable to remove this cash from the country due to political strife so I am begging for your help...blah, blah, blah"
No way - but I imagine there are hundreds of gullible fools out there who really believe they can help - and fall into the trap.
" Bite off more than you can chew, then chew like Hell!"
