strange combination

Order yourself a latte, and a pastry (The virtual cinnamon buns are excellent today). And have a nice chat.

strange combination

Postby hickybank » October 4th, 2019, 10:06 am

I watched channel 4s Sunday brunch last week, Simon Rimmer made a Tomato Tart & as usual all the guests raved about it.
It did sound nice so I downloaded the recipe & made it.
I did raise an eyebrow at the pastry ingredients but went ahead & made it.
What a disappointment, the filling was excellent, but the sweetness of the pastry completely overpowered the taste .
As there is still 2/3s left I have scooped out the filling & make a new pastry case for the remainder.
I have attached the recipe, have a look & let me know what you think
Cheers
Terry

I don't think I would care for that either. It smacks of the current craze for marrying brioche with savoury fillings which I don't usually like much.

Funny when we're all being told to cut down on sugar consumption! I think a lovely crumbly, buttery plain shortcrust would work much, much better.

Totally agree & that is what I will be doing.

It does make you wonder it all the guests on this type of show are told to say how great everything is

I'll ask my niece who is a producer on the programme. I know the crew are all very young, that may have an impact. I watch it every week but I've barely heard of most of the guests.

The guests always rave about everything on Saturday Kitchen as well. It would be rude not to.

While tomatoes do sometimes need a hint of sweetness I can't see myself enjoying what is in effect a tomato quiche inside a sweet case.

Did he actually use sugar in the programme, or start with the pastry already in the tin? I wonder if whoever puts the recipe online was just told to add a shortcrust pastry recipe to the filling ingredients, and didn't know that sweetened shortcrust wouldn't be suitable.

That recipe sounds most unpleasant

I suspect the idea may originate from a tomato tarte tatin ... a delicious thing if you get it right ... I have yet to perfect my version but every attempt has been really tasty ... just need to work on reducing the ‘juice’ and improving the caramelization (different to apples and pears).

You could well be right Suelle, but you would think at least they would vet it after ll it is their reputation on the line in the end

Laura says the guests are under no orders to say the food is lovely although they always do because it usually is. Re the recipes, Simon usually dictates them to one of the crew from his phone and then that person uploads it to the website. I think you can see there is a margin for error there.

Judy Joo is one of the guests tomorrow.

As an aside, Laura often brings leftovers from the show home. My sister has just texted to say that Judy Joo’s Monkey Bread is absolutely gorgeous!

sound like several tomato combinations I seen recipes for:
tomato soup cake
tomato ice cream
sun dried tomato muffins
tomato soup muffins
tomato soup cupcakes
sun dried tomato southern biscuits
Tomato soup cookies
tomatoes can overwhelm many dishes if used in excess.

You've missed the point, it was the fact the pastry was too sweet nothing to do with the tomatoes

So I tried it again this time with a proper shortcrust pastry.
What a difference, a lovely match of sweet & tart I will definitely be making it again
