Reusable fruit/veg bags

Postby cyprusmoira » November 8th, 2019, 11:10 am

Yesterday I was at the check out at our local supermarket, the couple in front of me had put their vegetables in a draw string net bag instead of the usual light weight plastic bags provided. Although he spoke English he was obviously foreign. Has anyone else seen these bags. I checked the Lake land site and can find nothing there
Is this a European idea, possibly German or Dutch?

They have them in Sainsbury’s, 30p each.

they also have them in lidl - two for 59p (i think) but i made a load from some organza i had, with a thin, parachute cord drawstring and sliding button closure.
you could get quite a few out of an old net curtain (if you had one) of whatever size you wanted/needed.
i made mine a few weeks before they started appearing in the shops and people kept stopping me to ask where i'd got them.
unfortunately the people who i see using more of the plastic wrapped stuff and umpteen bags for stuff like bananas (why‽) the most are the older generation - 60/70 plus.

I have bought a couple of these bags from Sainsbury's, they are good but overpriced at 30p as already mentioned.
You can always take your veg to the till loose, then pop them all in the same bag & separate when you get home

I was given some as a present some years ago, it was a pack with several in it which fold away back into a little handbag pack afterwards. I must look them out. I'm pleased to see them on sale on shops now.

I don't bother to wrap the loose stuff, straight into the trolley.

It's when it's something like sprouts that to take them to the counter loose becomes a bit trying :).

I have one of the Sainsbury's bags although I've taken to using it mainly for storing mushrooms. It's just right for that.

They still provide paper bags in the bread rolls/pastries bit.

But is any bag necessary, other than for sprouts or mushrooms and the like?
Surely carrots, onions, peppers, apples, oranges etc do not need to be wrapped.

I think it is supermarket driven, as a way to get you through the tills ASAP, the quicker they get you through then he more profit for them, unlike the old high street fruit & veg shops when service came before speed

Sorry Hicky, I don't really understand.
Just don't use the bags.
Simple.
I haven't used them, or carrier bags, for decades.
