A LITTLE STORY FOR CHRISTMAS

Postby Grasshopper » December 24th, 2019, 8:28 pm

I first wrote this a good while back, bit I've since done a rewrite. Just a little tale for the season.

SNOW BABY

It was Christmas Eve. The village of Little Dutton lay under a thick blanket of snow. Every house, every garden, every field and even the little church was draped in a crisp, white mantle.
The snow had ceased now, and the stars were peeping shyly from between the departing clouds. In the streets, little knots of people were heading homewards after the evening carol service in the church. Let us follow one such group, a sturdy couple in their 30's, and their two young children. All four were muffled up well against the cold, and their boots crunched through the pristine snow.

At last, they reached their front door, with its cheerful holly wreath. Once inside, and after much discarding and hanging up of coats, scarves, woolly hats, gloves and boots, Richard, the father, heaped fuel on the sleepy fire, which was soon blazing merrily. The decorations on the Christmas tree twinkled in the light of the dancing flames. Thomas, one of the family's cats, woke up, gave a cavernous yawn which showed off all his teeth, then went back to sleep again. Soon, everyone was settling down to a warm supper.

Suddenly, the cat-flap opened and in walked Tabitha, carrying something small and furry in her mouth.
"What have you got there, Tabs?", asked Richard, gently taking the little furry bundle from her. It was a kitten, a little ball of white fur, with black ears and a little black tail. It wasn't Tabitha's kitten - she couldn't have any, so where had it come from?
"It looks cold, the poor little scrap", said Mary, as she took the kitten from her husband's hands and gave it a rub with a warm towel, as Tabitha watched anxiously. The kitten gave a little mew, its wide blue eyes shining in wonder. Mary had a quick look under its tail. "It's a little boy", she said. "I know what this little fellow needs", she added, as she busied herself putting a saucer of food down for him. The kitten was soon eating, and giving out little purrs as he did.

Thomas climbed out of the cat-basket and ambled over to see what all the fuss was about.

"Tabs has taken to him already", said Richard, as Tabitha gave the now-replete kitten a wash. The children were enchanted. "Can we keep him? please?", they begged. "It depends", said their mother. "Someone might be looking for him."
"They might", added Richard. "But for now, he stays here."

Later, while ushering the children to bed, Richard took a last look at the cat-basket. All three animals were fast asleep, with the kitten, clean, warm, and with his belly full, curled into a contented little ball in the middle. On a shelf above where the cats were sleeping, a Nativity scene was on display, with parents, shepherds and Wise Men gathered around a crib, in which lay a sleeping Baby.
