hahahaha - i would imagine that they send the message to the service provider and they then relay it to all the numbers on their (automated) system!

Beautiful yes, the sun is out, but it's not very warm. The evenings are especially cold, down to freezing.

Re: Coronavirus threat

Postby Seatallan » March 24th, 2020, 3:59 pm

Question: I'm picking up some groceries for elderly neighbours over next day or two. I was intending to combine it with some bits for us but what do I do if challenged because I'm buying too many of the same item (some for my neighbours and some for us)? I don't want to go to town any more than necessary but can see I may have to make an extra trip if I'm unable to purchase for both of us. Any suggestions?

Edited to say: Neighbours have no internet access. We shop on line with Sainsbury's but there are no slots available at all. Tried ringing the 'vulnerable customer' phone number to see if we could arrange something in relation to home delivery for neighbours but it is permanently engaged...

The police are now being as active as possible here now in Belgium ( well.in cities) saw 3 seperate groups of 3 questioned and split when cycling. Sat/sun the groups were more noticable.

I've still not got through to Sainsbury's either. It's a good thing my mother has food in. I am expecting tonogiht's phone call to be full of woe. She was expecting the gardener today and last night was very stressed about him coming (nothing to do wiht the Corona Virus, except insofarthat she had planned in detail how to avoid coming into contact wiht him, how to communicate with him and how to pay him.) But I imagine him not coming will be even worse.

The police helicopters are hovering outside and the local motorbike gang clearly thing they have inherited the earth :( Would love to see them arrested

OH got her text message at about 10.00am this morning. Mine arrived at 4pm this afternoon. We are both with the same provider, and with a loosely linked billing. But her phone number is 20,000,000 less than mine!! :)

Went for my daily solo walk in the cemetery park

Much less busy than it has been, although the warmest day yet. Most people solo, or obviously in family groups, one adolescent girl rather sweetly enjoying the novelty of going for a mid-afternoon stroll with her dad.

BUT still a few 2s and 3s hanging out having apparently met up while out, including rather blatantly 2 mums with tots and buggies meeting up for a combined stroll. I despair.

So the panic buying has moved on to garden sundries now. A run on...bean seeds on Sarah Raven, peas and courgettes probably other fast growing veg. Not that fast growing though. Next door delivery of a sack of seed yesterday, apparently, but to be fair to them they have an allotment. But will they be allowed to go to it?!

I have enough peas, I think. Beans: well some left over from last year which may be ok. I had some in my 'basket' but too late. Hey ho. Might try other places. I will be upset, though if my plants orederd in January don't come. I am kind of counting on veg growing to maintain my sanity. Glad I got all that compost last week...

Marshalls have beans but are out of Basil.

Franchi seeds have fainted at the overhwelming stampede on their online shot and shut down.

There was a large farming/gardening business on the 1pm news saying they can’t get staff because of the new restrictions and it will all go to waste. And a few flower shops giving their blooms away because they’re not allowed to sell them.

Regarding gardening and growing things: one of our jobs over the next few weeks will be preparing the greenhouse for this years crops. Hopefully, when it is time for planting, we should be able to get to the garden centre for the plants.
Took my allowed exercise today ;) - walking down to our local little Tesco for a small amount of essential shopping.

I don´t want to be too serious, but I will be.
People need to STAY HOME, WEAR A FACE MASK AND GLOVES when they go out and TREAT THIS PANDEMIC SERIOUSLY.
The virus is uncontrollable at the moment, and anyone gadding around in public is being irresponsible.
the number of cases in the UK has increased by well over 1,300 in the past 24 hours. 8,164.
1 person with the virus can infect over 100 others just by being close to them - ie, on the bloody tube.
The sooner people realise that this is UNCONTROLLABLE, and DEADLY ( do we really want to die because we need to go to a meeting??) , the better. Forget social life. Forget coffe mornings. Forget trips to the shopping centre.
It´s not a joke, it´s not a right-wing, left-wing, imperialist or socialist plot - it´s a gigantic, worldwide pandemic and there is NO CURE, as yet.
So I´ll say it again. STAY HOME, TREAT IT SERIOUSLY.

Hear hear Clive. Although some of those injunctions are hard to obey due to shortages. We still don't have a strong enough message from the government I think. Boris putting on his serious face and telling the British people off for naughtily going out and about last week probably isn't going to cut it and some people just won't use their brains. They need to be commanded.

There's been a run on bird food too btw. Wouldn't be surprised if laptops was also on the list.

Quite EM I am sure some are doing that.

I am now going to attempt to ring Sainsburys again :( Lines should be open in a minute.

All of the supermarket online delivery services are either fully booked for months or are down.
If you need to get supplies to a vulnerable person use the Nextdoor or another of the volunteer services such as http://covidmutualaid.org/resources/

Look on the relevant local authority websites for info.

EDITED TO ADD: Freecycle are also taking requests for assistance with shopping etc ... all other Wanted and Offered posts have been deleted, other than for medical/emergency stuff.

It must be the same here. But since we are able-bodied, we do our own shopping. People are slowly getting the message and keep their distances, so it is quite safe. We were going to do only a weekly shop, but I had to get prescriptions last weekend and one that wasn't available then yesterday ... and I took the opportunity to saunter about the chemists ... it felt good to be out.
And since it wasn't full I felt safe to do so.
Things will settle down and will be a bit less panicky in a few days. You will see.
As for seeds ... now may be a good time to help each other out and swap seeds. Over here the post is still delivering. The virus does not seem to last longer than three days at most so just leaving things "in quarantine" for a few days should be safe.

WHO says there’s no point wasting face masks unless you either suspect you are currently infectious OR are giving medical or personal care and need to get in close There’s certainly no point in doing what people round here are doing and swathing your face in the dirtiest, nastiest old scarf you can find because you don’t have a mask.

The trouble with disposable masks and gloves is that unless people have been trained in their use they don’t put them on at the right point or discard them at the right point, and they can become transmitters of infection. Better just to watch your hands, which most people will do more often than they change gloves

:D No need to shout at us KK, I’m sure we’re all following the rules. :D Face mask and Gloves, wow, your socialist utopia is doing well, in our capitalist utopia a nurse has just posted this on line with photo,

"...we're asking schools to use their science goggles and beauticians to use their masks."

Meanwhile we’ve now ordered ordered 3.5 million testing sets, now? Should've been done a week or month ago. News items today show vans delivering protection gear to hospitals, that’s a few weeks too late.

And construction workers being told they must turn up for work or lose their jobs.

In Bristol at midnight, once the new rules kicked in (or not) two Iceland delivery vans were torched, meaning a lot of people won't get their food today, and calls to 999 doubled mostly to ask for clarification. Some rang to report people congregating. Chief Constable says not to ring the Police as their are officers patrolling the streets. Not where the vehicles were torched.
Every day is a good day, it's just that some days are better than others.

We are in lock down, no vehicle has passed by for at least half an hour, the trucks passing earlier belonged to the local farmers. We also require passes to move around the local roads, they are simple, basically a list of permitted activities including food shopping. Only one problem, the site has crashed

Prince Charles has tested positive. Hope he’s not been near his parents.

Whilst I am as annoyed as anyone else about lack of testing, I did read yesterday that there is a world-wide shortage of one of the required components. I had suspected that something like that was one of the reasons that testing here - and in other countries- was seemingly being rationed. It will be more critical once the virus starts to get under control a bit. A friend in Australia with an existing lung condition had to move heaven and earth to get tested even after a request from her GP. I think everywhere is struggling to get supplies and PPE where it is needed (although the latter is also the choice of successive world-wide governments not to heed infection control experts' warnings that they should be better prepared for an epidemic). I am increasingly worried about Trump and hope that the rest of the world prevents travel from the US until they are satisfied that the risk is acceptable. The only saving grace is that individual States have quite a lot of power.

The police stopped a local paperboy on his bike this morning and he had to prove why he was out and about on a bike (fairly obvious I should have thought but at least they're checking).

As he’s in Scotland and they are in Windsor, probably not
I suspect the advice they are getting is to keep the family in isolated cells

there's an app to download on your phone that's a simple tracker for the virus - . it doesn't ask a few pertinent questions like are you self isolating etc but i suppose it's really just a simple data logging tool - worth doing though - it may throw up the real figures if everybody did it.

I know what you mean but we have been told to walk or run or stay at home unless there is good reason so they have a right to check anyone in a car or on a bike and ask where they are going. They would have been better employed down our local canal path yesterday afternoon when a group of youths decided to race down it on off road motor bikes when people were walking .
