Lighting a candle

Order yourself a latte, and a pastry (The virtual cinnamon buns are excellent today). And have a nice chat.

Another virtual hug coming your way BB. I can only echo what everyone else has said. Even if this is the beginning of the end (and I very much hope not) I'll bet your mum wouldn't have missed her trip away and will have no regrets that she went.

Mum is responding to treatment for the pneumonia, and they are discussing reducing her reliance on oxygen, so small positive steps. She is having daily dialysis and as a result she has increased appetite, which is a relief as she last ate a meal eleven days ago!

Unfortunately we haven’t been able to visit her as the hospital is closed due to noro virus, I can’t see it being open again until at least the weekend. It’s a bit isolating for her but fortunately she has a mobile phone with her, not that she often answers it! But at least if she wanted to talk she can. I know she will be panicking about the noro, the one thing the consultant told her to be careful about was getting D & V, as that would cause her limited kidney function to fail, but as that has now already happened I don’t know if it’s a factor or not.

We are plannng that she will come home at some point so I have spent the morning going through Dads kitchen cupboards and binning anything out of date as dialysis patients have to be so careful as their immune system is shot. I was bemused to find that they had six kilos of soft brown sugar, it survived the cull as sugar doesn’t go out of date! What they could use it for, i am not all together sure?

Thank you for all your kind words.

Bizarrely I am working my way through mum's massive stock of brown sugar.. It's clearly a generational thing

I am psyching myself for the Service of Thanksgiving tomorrow, which is for my friend of 20 years who died of motor neurone disease on 5th January. I'm not sure what has happened about the interment, but it seems to have been family only. Just hoping that the snow doesn't disrupt any travel plans

Seems that small steps are being made in the right direction BB .

Hope that tomorrow goes smoothly Sue.

I shall probably be remembered as a brown sugar person too. Usually if I am planning to make something which needs it and I forget to check if I have any so err on the side of caution .

During the sugar "shortage" in the 1970s I was a Saturday girl in a supermarket.
We were selling 3 times the usual volume of the stuff.
The cupboard in Mum's front room contained 52 bags of sugar at one time, probably the reason for the shortage.

Hope mum continues to improve BB
My candle is lit tonight because it is 19 years ago today since my mum died, She was just short of 90. I always picked the first snowdrops to put with the candle but unfortunately snowdrops do not bloom here so I've put a little spray of winter jasmine in her vase today.

I can't believe that, after 19 years, I still have the urge to ring her most mornings.

Rats. Candle lit. A gingerbread one.

Whilst arranging my nan's funeral flowers, my mum shot off to the phone and dialled her number to ask her what she thought would work well. We all sat there stunned after we realised she was no longer there to ask for advice on such things.

Rocky  hope things are going well. Sending very positive thought to you and your OH ( and his mum ).

It’s the sort of op several members of my family have had and they’ve done really well, so I hope things turn out just as well for your OH. Don’t beat yourself up for not being there now ... he’s not on his own and there’s little you can do at the moment other than hold his hand, and I’m sure his Mum can do that ... you’ll be there for all the nursing, fetching and carrying that’ll be needed when he’s recovering.

I am lighting a candle for my work colleague and friend she lost her mum last night. It is only 18 months since her husband died. Also for my hairdresser who lost her best friend last week she was only 48 :(
