Rowan Gin

...Have just bottled up my rowan gin and I must say I'm rather pleased with it. I usually make sloe gin but the sloe crop was non-existent this year so I thought I'd experiment. It's more astringent than sloe gin but it has a lovely flavour. It's an attractive, very pale, orangey-pink. I'd post a pic but I'm hopeless at posting pics on here (always says they're too big).

Anyhow, an experiment that has worked out rather well I think.

Well, for some reason I was thinking Rowan berries were poisonous. I think someone misinformed me at some point about the Mountain Ash in my garden. Rowan gin here we come!

CC - rowan jelly is an alternative to redcurrant or crab apple with game & lamb (or on toast)

I think children are told not to pick them as they aren't nice raw and easily confused with other garden berries

Not only that.... but if children pick them, there are not enough left to make rowan gin out of......

My Scottish friends (the ones who have recently moved to a remote croft on the shores of Little Loch Broom) were well taken with the bottle I gave them for Christmas and apparently so were their crofting neighbours

I still have some Zosh but probably not for much longer- stocks are diminishing....
