Growing (and over wintering) globe artichokes

Has anyone overwintered globe artichoke plants?

I am not sure how to go about it. I have googled it, of course - there seem to be three methods. Mine are in 14 inch pots. They are also loking a bit speckledy (not enough food?)

I’ve only ever grown them in the ground... then I just protect them by mounding straw over the crown for the winter and leave them to get on with it.

What exactly is the crown?

One method involves cutting off all foliage down to the crown then put under cover (no light required.)

The crown is where the roots and stem merge ... where the upward growth comes from.

mine, in the barren wasteland are not overwintering yet - they've produced another 'globe'. i'm still deciding whether to leave them to flower or to eat them.

Ooh how exciting!

I mentioned mine to one of my writing friends who has an allotment and he says he creates a little insulated jacket for his. I guess I have a while to decide (?! Will keep an eye on the weather.) I don't think there's much floor space in the (very messy) shed at the mo. I would need to insulate the whole pot if I left them outside, I imagine...
