Mine isn't a new fangled Kindle, none of your fancy new models, I have had it about five years.

hiya, i've had a look through the inbuilt manual on my (also old) kindle. it says that if you've forgotten your password you have to phone customer services and they'll talk you through the reset.
i also found, online, this https://www.ifixit.com/Wiki/Amazon_Kindle_First_Generation_Troubleshooting which also tells you how to reset your password on an old kindle (whether it's the same generation as yours i don't know).
sliding and holding the on button for thirty seconds is also meant to get into the kindle - i think that was what a friend did when his froze.
it says that reseting may lose some of your content.
