I have a pigs foot in the freezer ... crubeens is one of my favourite dishes. I also use them as a great addition to a cassoulet as well as to a good stock, particularly if needed for a raised pork pie or a galantine. I also enjoy making and eating Pieds de cochon a la Menehould. No freezer should be without a pigs foot or two.

Just a quick look thinking ahead - that maybe we might want home delivery shopping in a few weeks. No slots with Sainsburys at all (for at least three weeks) and Ocado - you had to go in a queue to get on the web site.

Very worried about mother and tbh worried some of her carers will pinch her food. It's pretty clear they have done this in normal times in the past.

They are saying here that all the slots are booked and I read somewhere that at least one won't take on new customers. With talk of over 70s being forced to stay in, there had better be a jolly good system for the many who can't rely on family or neighbours in place. Round here it looks as though neighbourhoods are already starting to rally round which is great but I fear that some people will be missed because they don't want to bother anyone or are very isolated.

A call has gone out here (and presumably everywhere else) for British Red Cross Community Reserve volunteers to come forward. You can see which way the thinking is going .....

Hancock's statement was both reckless and without compassion. He should at least have stated that there were measures in place to ensure elderly people would be looked after, even if he was unable to give full details. The ineluctable conclusion is that at best, he hasn't thought of any - and at worst, he doesn't care. There must be a great number of vulnerable people worried sick about what's going to happen to them.

I don't suppose Hancock, Boris or Mr Cummings have the foggiest of what this is going to mean in practical terms to ordinary folk who have uncushioned, unprivileged lives. They don't have the relevant life experience or the imagination.

Did you see him on the Andrew Marr show on Sunday? If he'd been at sea you'd have thrown him a life jacket (or not, as the case may be!). I'm sure he cares but is getting a bit out of his depth. It's been a fair few years since leaders thought things through and then announced them rather than the reverse. Not a trend I care for, it makes them all look incompetent.

DS has connections with Dominos Pizza and has just sent me the instruction video for their new "contactless deliveries". Apparently people like Deliveroo are doing it too. It just means that you don't have physical contact with the delivery driver, not that the pizza is made and packed without contact but still is a good idea. The food is ordered online or by phone using a debit card. The pizza is boxed as usual then placed in another box which is folded inside out and special labels are placed on it so the driver knows it is a contactless delivery. On arrival, the driver phones the customer and finds out where they want it left. The inside out box is removed and placed on the ground as a barrier between food and ground and the order placed on it, with chilled items on top. The driver then takes steps back covering at least 3 metres and phones the customer again to say the food is waiting. He stands back but acknowledges the customer when they open the door.
It seems a good idea but those poor drivers will lose out on tips!

I have doubled my mother's shop, pretty much. She'll have a fit, but it's not like she's going to be paying for it before she next sees me. Not very optimistic about toilet paper for her, but the rest should be ok. Hopefully what needs to go in the freezer will fit (she freezes milk.)

I went into town briefly, to pick stuff up from the office, and there was a woman in a tiny Sainsbury's Local emptying the shelf of what was left of tins of baked beans, spaghetti etc into a basket...

We ordered pizza last night. The driver phoned me when he arrived and didn't ring the bell. He also left the delivery on our doorstep rather than hand it over.

Just back from my local big Sainsburys. Wanted to top up what I'd used over the past few days. There was hardly anyone in there and shelves were bare. I suspect they are having big problems with distribution now. Virtually no bread, chicken, soup, biscuits, jam, potatoes. No flour, yeast, eggs, hand wash soap- or curly wurlys!. Didn't necessarily want those things, though eggs would have been nice, just noticed them.

I buy my eggs from the farm gate and an honesty box. I needed some this week so called in on my way to walk the dog, got my usual dozen £1.50 - really good value. A good supply at the gate.

My sister rang whilst I was walking and asked me to pick her up a dozen on my way back.............all gone. Never known this before. No doubt that they will be replenished tomorrow morning, but unusual nevertheless.

I had an email from Sainsburys basically asking people not to buy nomre than they need and that there were no supply problem:

"You will have seen that, due to the ongoing uncertainty around the full impact of Coronavirus, supermarkets have been much busier than usual and customers are choosing to stock up.

I wanted to personally reassure you that we have more food and other essential items coming to us from manufacturers and into our warehouses and distribution centres. If we all shop just for the food that we and our families need, there will be enough for everyone.

I also wanted to let you know that at Sainsbury's, we are working really hard to ensure this remains the case. Over the past two weeks we have:

Ordered more stock of essential items from our suppliers

Put more capacity into our warehouses and

Set limits on a small number of items, including some cleaning products, soap and pain relief. This is a precautionary measure - if everyone shops normally, there will be enough for everyone.

There are gaps on shelves because of increased demand, but we have new stock arriving regularly and we're doing our best to keep shelves stocked. Our store colleagues are working tirelessly and doing the best job they can.

Which brings me onto a request. Please think before you buy and only buy what you and your family need. If we all do this then we can make sure we have enough for everyone. And please help elderly and vulnerable friends, family and neighbours with their shopping if you can.

school closed 2 weeks all sit down restaurants,bars, movie theater, gyms, public libraries and
places of worship are closed. gas stations , food store , auto repair,
hardware stores still open.no group gathering of more than 50
people; where i work has an exception given we are essential to economy
for the moment.

Oh dear, this is always an interesting discussion but the opinion of one side invariably remains incomprehensible to the other.

I think that if there are food shortages then governments have to act quickly to ration it or unpleasantness certainly can break out. If there is a sense of fairness then it removes the fear of not having enough and some of the squirrel mentality. Then only the unscrupulous are left to deal with.

2 pm, no bread or eggs at local Sainsbury or local Tesco, managed to get sliced bread at Waitrose but not much choice. Some fresh Gails loaves were there. I managed to get flaked almonds at Sainsbury so I can make another Swedish almond cake
No pasta anywhere. Milk was at different stages of selling out at all the shops. I noticed loo paper and kitchen paper in Tesco but wasn't looking for it so don't know about Sainsbury or Waitrose. I also noticed that the chickens were all gone.
We're very fortunate in that we have one of each store, and a Boots, at the end of the road so it's possible to try them all if what you wanted at the closest one (Tesco) is sold out.

The assistant in Sainsbury's said that a good time to go is at 11.30 pm, if we're up, before they close at midnight, as their delivery will have arrived and shelves being stocked. Otherwise I guess get there soon after they open.

Our biggest town store had no flour , fresh chicken , dried pulses or minced beef . Bread and eggs were quite low too though milk ok

Oh bugger re fresh good beginning to sell out. I do hope my mother gets eggs, milk and bread in her order on Thursday, and these form the bulk of her diet. If it's necessary, she will simply have to change her diet, but the critical thing will be that the rest of the order consists mainly of ice cream, Naked bars and a very little bit of meat, and some salad, so she simply won't have enough to eat. I am going to have to not think about it. Nothing I can do right now. It's a pity she wouldn't sign up to a milkman (who would have been delivering eggs and bread as well) when I suggested it some time ago.

It's also a pity the supermarkets can't have some priority treatment for the housebound.

Not holding my breath re loo paper for her.

We don't need anything at the moment, but we will. I would be very sad if I couldn't get eggs and milk. We have enough bread flour to make bread and can ration ourselves. Of course we are getting through more food that usual because we are at home.

gets scarce in the shops. there are plenty deer squirrel,
rabbit in area. personally i prefer to use bow and arrow or
sling shot since they are quieter than guns.

One doesn't have to eat meat... but I suppose hunting will get you out and about. A bit of exercise if your area goes into lock down. Alas all one can do in London is go jogging. I am not sure the foxes make good eating. (Plus most of them have mange.)

Herbi - there's an email from Sainsburys today saying that customers over 70 or those with disabilities will have priority with online deliveries. I assume most supermarkets who deliver will be doing the same. It looks as though you would need to be an established customer.

In cases such as your mother, where you might have placed the order with your own details, it could be worth calling their customer services so that they know who the order is for. I think that those orders will be got up at times when there are some stocks and they will probably get what they need. They're limiting the number of items per person in the shop (and I assume online too) to 3 of each thing. That's hard on elderly people who may just have one delivery to last a month or so.

I don't think one enters age when signing up with Sainsburys. The account is under her name, but the billing address and credit card details under mine. Will wait a bit to get in contact perhaps, or maybe fire off an email. I have no doubt they will be inundated and she has a delivery coming tomorrow anyway. Is that 3 of anything at all or just certain things? She requested about ten boxes of Naked bars and about 10 litres of milk.

Rang Sainsburys after all and after going through several menus they cut me off. Like to resolve things...) Will have to wait. Wish I could access her email, but it requires a verfication code.
edit: sorted. Can now access her emails. But I am getting emails from Sainsbury's so, although they send delivery details to her, other stuff comes to me. They no longer offer 'email support' so will just have to ring again.
